Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius, reopens with renewed elegance, offering a soulful island experience defined by colour, culture, and curated luxury.

With that introduction, I’m taking poetic license from the song commissioned by Shangri-la Le Touessrok, Mauritius to mark the resort’s reopening after a four-month renovation in October 2024. Written and performed by local father-and-daughter team Toto and Fiora Lebrasse, ‘Come Home’ welcomes back returning guests and invites new ones to experience the legendary moments created here. “Come home to Le Touessrok, living in Shangri-la style/ Where we fill your world with colour, add a service with a smile.” With simple lyrics and heartfelt delivery, the song captures the resort’s essence: joyful, personal, and warmly familiar.

As I lunch with Bernard Ramen, Director of Sales and Marketing, I reflect on how I’ve witnessed this resort’s evolution – first as Le Touessrok, then under Shangri-La, and now reimagined anew. The transformation balances refreshed spaces with the enduring warmth and authenticity that guests have always treasured.

Lunch at Coco’s, the newly revived beach restaurant set at the heart of the resort, was a great way to start. With glorious sea views, a relaxed yet refined decor enhanced with shades of yellow and blue, Coco’s offers a taste of Mauritian hospitality through fresh, seasonal dishes and, of course, its signature Ti Punch.

“We wanted this to feel like a Mauritian beach house,” says Ramen, pointing out dodo motifs that nod to local heritage.

The name itself is a local term of endearment related to the coconut fruit but is also being used by locals to express their affection and love to people,” Ramen explains. “It’s the perfect name for this relaxed setting that introduces a sense of the French Riviera – Mediterranean modernity.”

Coco’s golden hour is a highlight – cocktails by the Beach Bar, live local music and the unbeatable sunset glow. “Supporting local musicians, keeping this part of our culture, is essential for us. Artists like Toto are part of the reason guests keep returning,” says Ramen.

The resort has a new look and feel – from menus to furniture to interiors – but the soul remains. “It’s good to evolve while keeping the legacy alive. Many staff have worked here for decades – welcoming guests like family, passing down their passion and service culture,” he adds.

Interior designer Asmaa Said of Odd Duck Design has elevated the spaces with inspiration drawn from the island’s natural beauty – from the earthy tones of Chamarel to the vibrant flora. Guest rooms are themed Coral, Hibiscus, or Frangipani, each evoking native elements in a subtle, soothing palette.

Rooms, suites, and villas now feel more tranquil and luxurious than ever. The Coral and Hibiscus rooms offer a sense of calm and comfort, with soft natural light and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. The Hibiscus Signature Beachfront Suites, at 130sqm, are ideal for families, with direct beach access and expansive terraces. For the ultimate escape, the three-bedroom beach villas provide privacy, space, and refined seaside living.

Dining across the resort has been reimagined too. From exclusive Friday night dining in the Chef’s Garden to home-style curries prepared by local mamas and Dine by Design evenings in secluded corners of the resort, there’s something for every palate. Executive Chef Luca Gallo cooks at those intimate gatherings at Il Giardino – his risotto and tiramisu are the best I’ve tasted.

TSK – Touessrok Soul Kitchen – has replaced Le Bazar as the culinary hub. Designed for all-day dining, TSK combines international techniques with Mauritian ingredients in a bright, versatile setting that works for everything from breakfast gatherings to lively dinners.

Safran’s menu is a love letter to India and features some of my favourite dishes. Meanwhile, Kushi is a Japanese hideaway where Chef Harry’s omakase selection is the perfect introduction to a varied menu.

Vinoteca, the resort’s curated wine cellar, is home to over 450 labels, emphasising biodynamic selections and rare finds. Whether pairing wines with dinner at TSK or browsing for a bottle to enjoy at sunset, the experience is tailored to personal taste.

Beyond the accommodation and dining, the essence of Le Touessrok lies in its location: six beaches spread across four kilometres of untouched shoreline, plus access only for guests via a short boat ride to Ilot Mangénie, the resort’s private island – a place to soak up the sun in peaceful seclusion. Make the most of butler service at your cabana and indulge in the signature truffle pizza and your preferred tipple. Stay as long as you like – just don’t miss the last ferry!

The sheltered lagoon that laps the resort’s shores is also impressive, not only for its proximity to one of the best snorkelling spots I’ve discovered along the east coast. You can also stand on the sandbanks to readjust your mask and get your bearings. The area is preserved, so motorised watersports are limited and mostly directed to nearby Ile Aux Cerfs.

Wellness is another focus. Chi, The Spa offers holistic rituals and treatments to reset and renew, while morning paddleboarding or beach yoga sessions provide a connection to the land and sea. For couples, the resort remains a top choice for honeymoons and romantic getaways, with private dinners on the beach, spa experiences for two, and accommodations designed to inspire connection.

Following its thoughtful renovation, Shangri-La Le Touessrok emerges more rooted, more refined, and more attuned to today’s traveller. Whether you’re seeking solitude, celebration, or soulful connection, there’s a place for you here.

Mauritius is not just an idyllic luxury holiday getaway offering pristine beaches, verdant landscapes, and turquoise waters, it is also a thriving community that blends ultra modern convenience with natural beauty. Known for its dynamic economy supported by high-quality infrastructure and a mix of English and French cultural elements, the island offers a seamless blend of work and leisure in a paradisiacal setting. The Luxury Editor was recently invited to visit to learn about Anahita Mauritius’ latest property develeopment. Read on to find out more.

Introducing Anahita Beau Champ

Located between verdant mountains and a crystal-clear lagoon, Anahita Mauritius offers a breathtaking location on the pristine East coast of Mauritius. Since its inception in 2008, the Anahita Golf Resort (read our review here) has covered 213 hectares and is recognised as a premier residential and leisure estate in the Indian Ocean, featuring a signature golf course designed by Ernie Els, and two five-star hotels.

In 2023, the resort started its expansion with the introduction of Anahita Beau Champ, a 118-hectare development that embraces a holistic luxury rural lifestyle This new project (outline 1 in the image below) will not only introduce additional residential options but will also provide a suite of high-quality services and amenities to enhance the lifestyle of both future residents and the local community on the East coast.

A Community Rooted in History and Culture

The historical essence of the land is being preserved through rehabilitated heritage sites, transforming old molasses tanks and sugar factories into vibrant community hubs like Zeste, a café and deli that offers locally sourced foods and a social space for residents.

Sustainable Development at Its Core

The development is dedicated to sustainable initiatives, guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, encapsulated in its three strategic pillars: “SmartEst, HealthiEst, GreenEst”. The project is prioritising renewable energy and has earned the WELL Community pre-certification to underscore its commitment to a healthy living environment.

The SmartEst pillar includes initiatives like smart agriculture, adaptive reuse, economic opportunities in innovation and tourism, electric mobility, mixed-use neighbourhoods, water and energy efficiency, and environmental conservation through practices like waste recycling and rainwater harvesting, all aimed at creating a productive and sustainable community at the heart of the community.

Embracing Heritage and Nature

At Anahita Beau Champ, meticulous landscape design is employed to conserve the area’s natural heritage and foster a genuine atmosphere conducive to tranquillity and well-being.

Central to the development is the 5-hectare agricultural area along a creek, dedicated to sustainable farming practices. This approach yields a continuous supply of local fruits, vegetables, aromatic plants, and flowers, supported by meticulous soil management and planning.

The project’s philosophy emphasises a return to nature through daily activities that enhance well-being.

Preserving the Natural Environment

  • Palm Alley: This picturesque avenue, flanked by majestic palms along the canal, is the primary pedestrian thoroughfare. It is bordered by residential villas and spaces for leisure, providing a delightful outdoor experience.
  • Spring Park: Originating from a valley stream, this tranquil park is marked by a natural amphitheatre, historic freshwater prawn ponds, and areas cultivating vanilla, cocoa, and coffee. It offers a perfect spot for leisurely walks or relaxation amidst nature.

Reviving Historical Heritage

  • Historic Sites at Anahita Beau Champ: The estate’s rich history is celebrated through the preservation of its historical sites, enriching the locale with unique charm.
  • The Old Molasses Tanks – Zeste Café, Restaurant, and Deli: Enjoy a warm beverage and healthy dishes made from locally sourced produce, or pick up fresh produce directly from the estate’s orchards. Zeste provides a cosy setting for socialising, located in the renovated molasses tanks.
  • Zeste Pool: Situated among coconut trees, this pool is a refreshing retreat close to the restaurant, perfect for a swim surrounded by lush nature.
  • The Old Sugar Factory – The Factory: This revitalised historic building now serves as a dynamic center where visitors can shop, exercise, enjoy art, attend events, or relax with loved ones.

Coastal Leisure at Anahita Beau Champ

  • Amarela, Beach & Boat Club: Dine by the ocean, engage in watersports, relax on a sunbed to the soothing ocean sounds, or take a shuttle to Île aux Cerfs. Amarela offers a serene escape with full access to boating facilities, including a boat park and moorings, ensuring a delightful maritime experience.

First Residential Phase

The first phase of the development is called L’Écho des Champs and will consist of 7 villas, 12 apartments, 3 penthouses and 31 plots of serviced land.

Demera Villas

Meticulously designed, the villas integrate effortlessly with the estate’s lush environment, utilising natural materials like volcanic stone, wood, shingles, and thatch. This fusion of modern and traditional architectural styles adds to the appeal of these residences. The villas are offered in three distinct models, each tailored to the specific orientation and terrain of the site, positioned along the picturesque palm-lined path.

  • Demera Villa, Model 2 is bathed in sunlight throughout the day, with living areas oriented to the north and south. These villas provide stunning vistas of a small woodland and the palm avenue.
  • Demera Villa, Model 3 shares the architectural elements of Model 2 but occupies a slightly more compact area. The pool is situated perpendicular to the expansive terrace, offering a unique view of the lush tropical garden.
  • Demera Villa, Model 4 is crafted to maximise the enjoyment of the outdoors, with living spaces that open directly onto the garden, providing spectacular views.

Apartments are thoughtfully situated in various locations across the estate, spread out among several residential complexes and with their pitched roofs, seamlessly integrate into the landscaped surroundings. Details like terrace structures, railings, and metal staircases pay homage to the industrial design of a nearby historical factory, while the lush tropical gardens further enhance the architectural blend. L’Echo des Champs offers twelve apartments with two to three bedrooms, in addition to three spacious three-bedroom penthouses.

Serviced Land

Secure a plot at Anahita Beau Champ and create your ideal villa within your financial plan on a magnificent parcel of land, sizes ranging from 965 to 1,519 square meters. Select your preferred team of consultants and contractors to realise your vision, all while complying with the estate’s architectural and landscaping standards.

Why Invest in Anahita Beau Champ?

Anahita Beau Champ is not just a residence but a promise of growth and prosperity, offering a unique lifestyle that integrates luxury, sustainability, and wellness. As Mauritius continues to attract global interest for its economic stability and quality of life, investments in such sustainable developments promise substantial returns both financially and in terms of quality of life.

In addition enjoy a safe and healthy environment, with proximity to two exceptional golf courses and the island’s largest lagoon. Benefit from comprehensive amenities including local shops, office spaces, a sports centre, multiple restaurants, a beach and boat club, and a school. Additionally, as an investor, you can obtain your residence permit, have the option to resell your property on the international market, and receive discounts on various services and activities throughout the estate.

Amari at LUX* Belle Mare has been Chef Vineet Bhatia’s Mauritian home for a decade. A new look warranted a new menu to celebrate the resort’s reopening in October 2023 after a devastating fire, enabling him and his team to reimagine their culinary offering in an exceptional environment. The result is even more soothing for body, mind and soul than before, as Debbie Hathway finds out.

Derived from the Sanskrit (amar) meaning ‘immortal, eternal’, Amari at LUX* Belle Mare intertwines a culinary narrative bridging the flavours of India and Mauritius. Guided by the esteemed Vineet Bhatia MBE, hailed as the pioneer of modern Indian cuisine, the menu manifests his lifelong gastronomic odyssey. Rooted in diverse influences and underscored by the profound belief in food as a universal language fostering connections, Amari embodies Chef Vineet’s enduring passion for spices and flavours and LUX* Resorts’ “spirited, creative, caring, and tasteful hospitality brand [established] to help people celebrate life.”

I met Vineet at another luxury resort in Mauritius before opening Amari, and our paths have crossed many times since. We chatted then over a searing hot tandoor oven as he baked naan bread for guests eager to sample his fare under the stars on a moonlit night on a secluded east-coast peninsula. That serendipitous conversation inspired a feature piece, marking the genesis of my unwavering admiration. Since then, I’ve been a devoted patron, frequenting Amari by Vineet (now simply named Amari) at LUX* Belle Mare, tracing the coastline from our inaugural encounter point, and indulging in the culinary delights at Rasoi by Vineet in Geneva on multiple occasions before its pandemic-induced closure.

Over the years, Amari has flourished under the adept stewardship of Chef de Cuisine Subi Mungroo and his proficient team, comprising talents like Tandoor Chef Sandeep Lodeechun, Sous Chef Ravi Dookhun, Chef de Partie (Curry section) Swaraj (Kunal) Ramgoolam, and Rajiv Gangaram.

Hands-on, always

Chef Vineet periodically returns to infuse the menu with fresh perspectives, turning visits into family holidays whenever possible. This time, he and Rashima, his wife and business partner, were there to supervise Amari’s renovation and oversee the finishing touches before the much-heralded reopening of LUX* Belle Mare on October 1, 2023. The resort has been so successful that the Forbes Travel Guide awarded it five stars for 2024.

Rashima recounted their odyssey in reimagining the culinary landscape, preserving Amari’s essence while subtly evolving its ambience over the past seven years. Reflecting on their enduring connection to Mauritius, she said that much like their evolving perception of this enchanting island, Amari encapsulates a journey of transformation and growth, resonating with their culinary ethos and life’s trajectory.

Read our guide to the best hotels in Mauritius

“In many ways, we approached the concept the way we felt about Mauritius [in the beginning] and how we feel at this point in our lives. We’ve been coming to the island as a family since 2001, but Vineet first touched these shores in 1992, so his recollection and memory of Mauritius as an island place is from that time. In 2001, we experienced a different Mauritius. And now, when we visit, it’s completely different again. So, how do we feel about that?

“And also from our stage of life, where we are now, and his [position] as a chef… he’s not stopped evolving but he’s stopped cooking to please. He’s no longer that student trying to get a foothold or that chef trying to sustain himself and please his partners or investors; it’s not the case anymore. Today, he’s very much about, ‘What do I want to do? What resonates with me? What am I happy eating? What am I happy cooking?’”

The revamped Amari menu is a testament to Chef Vineet’s maturation as a culinary maestro and his unwavering commitment to sustainability and holistic well-being. Embracing the intrinsic fusion of Indian and Mauritian cuisines, each dish reflects a harmonious interplay of flavours and textures, curated to satiate discerning palates.

Design Nuances

In contrast to traditional Indian eateries, Amari’s aesthetic diverges, courtesy of the visionary Jean-Marc Tang’s innovative design ethos, which evokes a tropical tapestry through a palette of coral, blush, and sand hues. His artistic vision transcends conventional paradigms, imbuing Amari with a serene, spa-like ambience that beckons guests on a sensory journey.

Rashima adds: “I think Jean-Marc has done a very good job because what we have right now is a very different take on Indian food ambience-wise. You have a very natural, holistic Indian appeal, down to the terracotta walls. Nothing else is there. Not one artefact, picture or wall hanging. When it was coming together from a design point of view, before the tables had gone in, I would have said it passed as a very good spa. It has this serenity and calmness to it, because of the very tasteful calamine, terracotta colour.”

And that lack of paintings or wall hangings makes the space so unique. The solution may have been wallpaper in other parts of the world, but Jean-Marc sourced local artisans to paint just one mural in a style deeply rooted in Indian culture, yet it was pretty uncommon. The main characteristic is its composition of dots and lines representing movement. “It’s a tribal art called Gond, named after one of the largest and oldest tribes in India. They occupied the central plateau, and they would draw these murals or paintings around their house. They were all about connecting with nature, so they drew the fish, birds, trees, and plants around them,” says Rashima. “And that is what we have here because we are surrounded by nature. The tree stands for spirituality, or connection to God, extending from earth to heaven as one of the tallest living things, so it’s all positive energy. So, for us, it was one more representation of the Indian aspect that perhaps is not very well known and people will ask about it.”

Mauritian Craftsmanship

A testament to their reverence for indigenous craftsmanship, Jean-Marc collaborated with local artisans to craft bespoke furnishings, echoing the organic allure of Mauritius’s landscape. Rashima’s design sensibilities seamlessly integrate with this narrative, accentuating the restaurant’s earthy charm with stoneware and tableware reminiscent of the island’s natural splendour.

Amidst these transformations, the restaurant’s entrance has undergone a subtle yet transformative shift. It ushers guests through a curved tunnel suffused with soft illumination, gradually revealing the culinary sanctum within. “You come out not quite at the centre. It slowly reveals itself. And that, I think, is the best part of the Amari renovation,” says Rashima.

The larger kitchen contains three tandoori ovens, visible through extensive windows that enable patrons to watch some of the food preparation and gesture to the staff, who appear unhurried, calm, and smiling – awaiting feedback on their delectable presentations.

I was one of the first journalists to dine there after the reopening, an experience I often revisit in my mind’s eye. I had a no-alcohol cocktail comprising cassis, raspberry, Darjeeling tea and sugar, followed by one of the starters Rashima had mentioned – the Lattice Samosa Chaat, a vegetarian dish involving a vegetable samosa, chickpeas, tamarind, and herb chutneys. I opted for the Lemongrass Chilli Coconut Prawns (coastal preparation of prawns in lemongrass, coconut, Kaffir lime and chilli flakes) as the main course, saving room for my new favourite dessert – Turmeric Tres Leches (cinnamon coconut-pineapple basundi, Mauritian vanilla-pineapple cream, almond bark). A light, not-too-sweet finish to the meal, Turmeric Tres Leches redefines the term “melt in the mouth” and left me wishing for seconds.

Thinking back, there’s one element available only at Amari that can’t be bought or trained: Mauritian staff who make you feel like one of the family. Mauritians are renowned for their hospitality, but I have yet to discover a team that delivers a more authentic, welcoming, familial service than this one. Seating is limited, so make it a point to book when you check in. It’s one of several special LUX* Belle Mare experiences you don’t want to miss.

Suites and villas with prestige

Book a suite with a living area, kitchen and private terrace with views of gardens, the golf course, or the sea. Prestige suites have one, two, or three bedrooms, kitchens, and a private infinity-edge plunge pool. But for the most space and privacy, opt for a three-bedroom deluxe villa set over two levels — in addition to a spacious interior conducive to family living (areas can be made child-proof on request), it will have a deck with a full-length swimming pool and a dedicated area of garden space.

Our Suite During Our Stay

During our stay at Anahita Golf & Spa Resort, we were hosted in one of the property’s One Bedroom Junior Suites. Located along Hole No. 1 of the Ernie Els Design golf course, these suites are elegantly decorated with Mauritian influences. Each 60 m² suite features a covered entrance, a kitchenette with a dining counter, a living area, and a veranda with a seating area that overlooks a landscaped garden and the golf course.

Anahita Private Villas Renatals

The Anahita resort also offers properties for sale and rental, we had the opportunity to view one for rent – Villa Charlotte. a luxurious residence with 9,730 square feet of living space, including six bedrooms. It features a beautifully landscaped private garden, ideal for privacy and relaxation.

You can discover more about Anahita Private Vilas Rentals here.

The villa is designed with contemporary interiors and bespoke, locally made furniture in each uniquely decorated room. A central feature is the large open-plan kitchen and living area adjacent to a stunning swimming pool. The master bedroom boasts a private terrace with exceptional sea views. Additionally, there is a twin bedroom with an ensuite, making the villa suitable for families, as all bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms.

Five-Star Dining

Origine is the main restaurant at the resort, open morning and night with an open kitchen allowing chefs to personalise their meals à la minute. For an intimate and unique fine dining experience book a table at Signature (listed in our guide to the best dining in Mauritius), where guests enjoy an interactive dining concept on selected evenings, the dining experience incorporates 3D visual technology, image mapping, props, an open kitchen, and storytelling techniques.

For Mediterranean and Mauritian cuisine visit the thatched, semi-alfresco Bliss which serves both lunch and dinner in a beautiful beachside setting.

For those wanting to watch a spot of golfing activity, head to the clubhouse overlooking Ernie Els 18th hole. Trattoria Restaurant «Il Forno» serves a ‘Clubhouse’ style lunch and in the evening an appealing selection of delicious traditional Italian dishes and wines.

Breakfast

Served in Origine a vast number of serving stations offer a wealth of breakfast options, I can guarantee you will be going back for more.

Insuite Dining

In addition to room service, guests also have the option to organise a dinner party. This event can be catered by a private chef in your fully equipped kitchen, with service provided by a dedicated waiter, all within the private setting of your suite or villa.

Tea Treatments at the Thémaé Spa

The French brand Thémaé (whose name means Japanese tea ceremony or way of tea) is behind the resort’s tea-themed spa. Ceremonies are held within its outdoor tea lounge. Eight single treatment rooms and one double with its own garden area, set the scene for tea-infused therapies created with long-lasting results in mind. There are interior and exterior showers, changing rooms, steam room, and a manicure and pedicure space.

Ernie Els & Bernhard Langer Golf Courses

Home to two exceptional 18-hole courses, Anahita Golf & Spa Resort is on the bucket list of many golfers. Guests staying here can play on both, with one green fee and 55 practice balls per person, per night. The first of the two courses, Anahita Golf, is a challenging par-72 championship course beside the main resort. Built to USGA standards, it has large fairways and five sets of tees. Six of the holes lie beside the ocean and the final shot is something very special indeed. The course hosted the Mauritian Open for the first time in November 2018. Equally spectacular are the 18 holes on Ile aux Cerfs par-72 championship golf course, accessed via a short complimentary ferry crossing, with its own 300-metre beach, seafood grill restaurant and bar for after the game.

Beaches And Pool

Quayside

And that’s not all. Quayside is the resort’s boathouse offering a range of activities – Hobbie Cats, fun boats, lasers, windsurfs, kayaks, paddle boards and pedal boats are complimentary, with PADI diving, deep sea fishing, speed boat rides, waterskiing and glass-bottomed boats available for an additional fee – enabling guests to enjoy thrills and spills in the water and exploration of the coastline’s colourful marine life.

Four Seasons

It’s worth noting that Anahita is connected to the Four Season Resort, which has a fantastic bar and further dining options, a golf buggy can take you between each resort in around ten minutes.

A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this stunning 2500-acre Mauritian estate takes its cues from the French plantations of old, emulating their refined grandeur, while weaving in a contemporary, barefoot chic feel. On the grounds, you’ll find the Seven Colours Spa, two 18-hole championship golf courses, sports and games facilities, alfresco movie screenings and four restaurants. Those staying here can also make use of the amenities at sister hotel, the Heritage Awali. Part of UNESCO-protected forests and coastlines, Heritage Le Telfair is an unspoilt paradise, with all-suite accommodation making it the perfect choice for a relaxing getaway in the sun. The Luxury Editor recently stayed here while discovering more about Heritage The Villas residential property opportunities so read on to discover more.

19th-Century Influences

The hotel’s namesake is its founder, Charles Telfair. Telfair was a Northern Irish botanist who made his home here back in the 19th century, building an impressive manor house. The resort is now part of the Heritage portfolio, a hospitality brand committed to creating glamorous experiences alongside a sustainable resort lifestyle. Wellness, nature and golf are all integral to its philosophy, lending itself to guests with a number of priorities; from spa-like serenity to local discovery, sporting adventures, romance and family fun.

Beautiful Bel Ombre

The village-based resort leads to the Indian Ocean, is surrounded by luscious gardens with indigenous planting and is flanked by the Savanne mountain range. It’s part of Bel Ombre on the island’s southern coast, which is home to an untouched nature reserve filled with endemic plants and birds such as the native Pink Pigeon. Venture just a short distance from the hotel and you can take a 4×4 jeep safari to see wildlife such as boar and deer, hike and swim in waterfalls.

Getting two and from the airport is easy and takes around 45 minutes and the hotel can arrange pick up from the airport for you – which is a blessing when you arrive off an early morning UK flight. Door staff on arrival will attend to your every need, supply a welcome drink and chilled cloth, then guide you along to your suite.

Tropical Suites

Deluxe Suites are either on the beachfront or have a view of the sea; Junior Suites can be found on the beachfront or with a garden view; Senior Suites look out onto the ocean; and Ocean Suites are steps from the sand with Panama hats provided for guests’ use. Most cater for up to two adults and two children, some have four-poster beds and exterior daybeds. And all have a soothing contemporary design, bringing the blues, greens and sandy tones from the outdoors in, along with light wood furnishings, rattan fixtures and artworks by Christian Lacroix.

During our stay we were hosted in one of the property’s beautiful Delux Suites.

Oceanside Dining

Annabella’s is the resorts main restaurant, with an interactive show kitchen and rotating menus. Ginja, perched on the beach with tables by the water’s edge illuminated by flaming torches, serves Asian cuisine with a romantic ambience. For drinks on the sand and seafood by the pool (also overlooking the beach), head to Le Palmier. Or if you’re seeking Mauritian food in an adult-only atmosphere, book a table at the vintage Chateau de Bel Ombre. Then there’s the Cavendish bar and lounge, with a library of books, comfy armchairs, music and views of the river.

C Beach Club

Experience a vibrant laidback atmosphere at the hotel’s fashionable beach club, where the fusion of tropical elements and modern aesthetics creates the perfect setting. You can indulge in a menu of Mediterranean-inspired summer delights, brimming with lively flavours and colours, all while taking in the breathtaking views of the serene lagoon.

Anabellas Breakfast

A huge banquet of breakfast items awaits in Anabellas Restaurant. Start off with a freshly squeezed juice at the juice bar, have eggs cooked to order and fill your plate up with a selection of delicious items from all corners of the world.

Chateau

Set within a 19th-century plantation house on the grounds of Le Chateau Golf Course, which is a short five-minute drive from the hotel lies Le Château De Bel Ombre (one of the best fine dining experiences on the island). And it so worthwhile having dinner at while you stay in the hotel.

This former family home surrounds its diners with period elegance. Wood-panelled walls, cornicing, crystal chandeliers, gilt mirrors and antique wooden tables with intricate carvings are paired with linen tablecloths, and plush upholstered cream chairs to ensure patrons are sufficiently comfortable to savour many courses in true French fine dining style.

The cooking follows a farm-to-plate philosophy and delivers the flavours of Mauritius. A dinner service is provided daily from 7 pm, with lunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and if you want to stay overnight you can even book a night in the first suite, with its canopy bed and butler service to complete this extraordinary and not to be missed experience on the island.

If you want to stay overnight you can even book a night in the first suite, with its canopy bed and butler service to complete this extraordinary and not to be missed experience on the island.

Seven Colours Spa

The spa is one of the key components of the Heritage Le Telfair experience. Guests received tailored therapies (including those designed for golfers) in the nine treatment chambers. Couples can book one of six double treatment rooms or the honeymoon suite, and there are two outdoor suites to connect with nature. Male and female steam and sauna rooms are found alongside a vitality pool with bubble beds, hydromassage jets and a sensory shower. And guests can ensure they always look their best, with visits to the hairdressing salon, and a manicure and pedicure parlour. Post-treatment, the in-spa dining options include a wellness menu of juices, infusions and healthy, nutritious dishes.

Swimming and Water Sports

In addition, the resort offers two pools (one catering to families), a playground, a kids club, a tennis court, a gym, a games room and a programme of entertainment for those young and old — as such, it works well for those with children. But it also serves as a back-to-nature sanctuary for couples seeking grown-up time and romance with first-class service, in an idyllic setting.

The Indian Ocean’s “Best Golf Course”

Heritage Le Telfair provides access to not one, but two leading courses. Le Château Golf Course is the only 45-hole golf course you’ll find in the area and is set on the grounds of a vintage chateau (where you can enjoy good food after a round). In 2023, this was joined by La Réserve Golf Links (the first and currently the only contemporary links course in the Indian Ocean), co-designed by former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen. Both have hosted the Mauritius Open, a DP World Tour event, with La Réserve doing so immediately after launching. The Golfzon Leadbetter Golf Academy is also part of the golfing offer. Here you can book private sessions and group coaching either for yourself or your children.

Final Thoughts

This exquisite Mauritian property is infused with the essence of its sugar plantation history and colonial elegance. With generously sized suites, fantastic amenities and indulgently timing options, makes it one of the premier luxury hotel destinations on the island and a must to stay at when visiting Mauritius.

From opulent resorts to charming colonial estates, Mauritius beckons discerning diners with its fusion of flavours — an eclectic combination that has been influenced by Indian, Chinese, African and European culinary traditions. Combined with a consistently postcard-worthy tropical backdrop of turquoise lagoons, lush mountains, white powdery sands and a gentle warm breeze, the culinary scene on the island is alluring on a multi-sensory level. So if you have an Indian Ocean getaway planned soon, here are the best restaurants to book to experience the best of Mauritian cuisine.

Signature

Set within the stunning Anahita Golf and Spa Resort, Signature Restaurant is more than just a restaurant, it’s an innovative dining concept.  Merging cutting-edge 3D visual technology, image mapping, and experiential props with fine dining, the culinary experience becomes a feast for all the senses. The menu and the story change in accordance with the theme of the ‘show’ but one thing is for sure guests are guaranteed an unforgettable experience in this intimate and highly unique restaurant. Dress code is smart casual.

Inti

Peruvian food may not be what you’d expected on arrival in Mauritius, but an abundance of fresh fish and southern hemisphere vegetables ensures its suitability for this part of the globe. Based within the Lux Resort, Inti offers a dinner service (every day except Sunday) by Chef Pedro Burgos. If you’re staying here, do be aware that Inti is not part of the half, full board or all-inclusive packages, but it is discounted for guests and well worth an additional spend. Begin your meal with an aperitif and aperitivo such as empanadas; then feast on South American tapas, skewers and ceviche; followed by a rib-eye steak, huge langoustines or a green risotto; and finally a portion of churros.

www.luxresorts.com

Umami

The word umami is Japanese for a ‘pleasant, savoury taste’ and is part of the five established basic tastes. But it’s fair to say that the food you’ll encounter here is far more than pleasant. Rather it’s exquisite, offering lunch and dinner in contemporary surroundings (its illuminated blue bar makes for an eye-catching centrepiece). On the menu are sashimi, nigiri and maki, Kobe beef and Australian lamb cooked on the in-house robata grill, and teppanyaki dishes heated in the show kitchen over a dramatic flame. Do pair your food with some saké — there are at least 30 types in the cellar, along with a wealth of Japanese whiskeys.

Gin’ja

Gaze past the palm trees to the sea, as you await your poached lobster at Gin’ja. It’s part of the Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort, serving a sophisticated Pan-Asian menu nightly. Dishes like sushi, pad Thai, flaming lobster and nasi goreng can be ordered, along with champagne by the glass. A top tip here to elevate your meal to another level is to book your table to coincide with sunset; the views are the best in the complex, making it a romantic spot for a proposal or special occasion.

heritageresorts.mu

Le Chamarel Restaurant

When it comes to views, those from this restaurant are almost impossible to beat. Set among the treetops, 250 metres above sea level, it’s part of the Le Pavillon de Case Noyale private estate. Showcasing Creole food, music and culture, Le Chamarel provides a sense of immersion. Come here for breakfast, morning (French pressed) coffee and freshly baked pastries, or for a signature lunch; La Table Créole, where you’ll be invited to discover an array of local flavours. Later in the afternoon, you can enjoy some Rhumtails (homemade rum infused with Mauritian fruits and spices) and snacks.

www.lechamarelrestaurant.com

Le Capitaine

Surrounded by a fertile and warm ocean, Mauritius excels in seafood. And this is one of the oldest establishments on the island to serve it. You’ll find the appropriately maritime-named establishment in the village of Grand Bay, where it’s been welcoming guests since 1989. Baked crab gratin with heart of palm; crispy zaatar marinated tiger prawns in lobster bisque cream; lobster ravioli; and braised Babonne fish fillet are among the delicacies you can feast on at Le Capitaine. Naturally, the restaurant overlooks the water, and a wooden pier.

www.lecapitaine.mu

Acquapazza

Tuscan Chef Marco Garfagnini, who’s no stranger to a Michelin star, took the reins at Acquapazza in 2022. The restaurant offers family-style dining with the likes of woodfired pizzettas, seafood, Marco’s own Japanese-inspired secret pasta recipe and his signature dolce. A la carte, vegan, vegetarian and five-course tasting menus are served, alongside a gourmet kids’ menu that’s a far cry from chicken nuggets and beans. The teak indoor-outdoor restaurant features large pizza ovens and a rustic open kitchen area. Laid-back, yet stylish, Acquapazza is ideal for families seeking a relaxed, but refined meal.

Noble House

Seeking to revive the lost recipes of a time gone by, when ships carried precious spices, ingredients and textiles across the trade routes, Noble House pays tribute to local origins. Alongside these signature dishes, there are those from around the world, crafted from sustainable ingredients to create healthy, flavour-filled meals. Guests will find vegetarian, gluten-free, halal and vegan options on the menus, which include the likes of wok-fried lobster with tamarind sauce, braised lamb leg with Massaman curry paste, coconut milk and pumpkin and ice cream tempura.

mauritius.intercontinental.com

La Table du Château

While most upscale eateries on the island have sea and sand as their vistas, this one has a castle (majestically illuminated after dark). Found on the grounds of Domaine de Labourdonnais, among manicured lawns and a hundred-year-old lychee tree, the restaurant’s tables are set outside in a tableau of green. The fruits and vegetables served as part of the meals also originate here, plucked from the Labourdonnais’ orchards. Most of the rest come from within the area, predominantly a nearby market. La Table du Château’s seasonal menus are prepared by Chef Fabio de Poli.

La Reserve Golf Links & Le Chateau

The island paints the quintessential picture of paradise itself, but it’s also a paradise for golfers with world-leading facilities. The newest of these is La Réserve Golf Links at Heritage Golf Club, a contemporary course unlike any other in the Indian Ocean, that launched in December 2023. Set on a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it was co-designed by Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen and played host to the DP World Tour 2023 Mauritius Open. The Club’s other course, Le Chateau, has hosted many editions of the same event. Set within the French-style manicured grounds of a 19th-century chateau (in which you can dine by candlelight), its 18 holes and practice range are populated by lakes, streams, and a grand centenary tree.

There are many ways and means to experience the UNESCO biosphere; 4×4 rides, quad bike and buggy tours, picnics, guided hikes by botanists, waterfall walks and swims, and sunset wildlife safaris are all popular excursions that can be completed in a matter of hours, or over a full day.

Ile aux Cerfs Golf

An isle all of its own, this Golf Club a little off Mauritius’ “mainland”, is reached by boat or helicopter, creating a sense of exclusivity from the outset. Designed by the championship golfer Bernhard Langer, its 18 holes — all of which have ocean views or glimpses — span the entirety of  Ile aux Cerfs’ 38 hectares. The course is made up of volcanic rock outcrops, lakes, gullies and tropical fauna and was given the prized first place on the list of Top-20 Golf Courses to play once in your lifetime by Golf World magazine. Post-game, golfers can recline beneath a parasol on a beach sunbed with cocktails or enjoy some local seafood specialties at the Langer’s Bar & Grill.

Black River Gorges National Park

Located in the southwest, this is the largest national park on the island. Founded in the 1990s, it’s characterised by lush greenery, dense forests, rolling hills and dramatic landscapes, providing a stark contrast to the island’s renowned white sandy beaches — notable landmarks include Alexandra Falls and the Black River Peak, the highest point in Mauritius. The biodiverse park serves as a vital sanctuary for endemic plant and animal species, including endangered birds like the Mauritius kestrel and the echo parakeet. Well-maintained hiking trails vary in difficulty, making the park accessible to both casual walkers and avid hikers. Peaceful and serene, Black River Gorges National Park shows Mauritian commitment to preserving unique and fragile ecosystems.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

Established in 1735, this is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere and is widely revered as one of the best in the world. Named after the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, it spans 37 hectares and is a piece of history  — an exhibition within the Château de Mon Plaisir (an old French colonial mansion within the grounds) tells its story. The collection of tropical and subtropical plants includes palms, spices, medicinal plants and aquatic flora. SSR’s most significant attractions are the giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies, known for their enormous floating leaves and The Talipot Palm, which is said to bloom every 60 to 100 years. The garden’s central location in the Pamplemousses district makes it easily accessible for both locals and tourists.

The collection showcases an unbelievable range of shell shapes, colours and sizes and there is plenty of useful information to keep amateurs to expert collectors well informed.

L’Aventure du Sucre

Translated as The Sugar Adventure, this museum/attraction is comprised of a former sugar mill and the colonial-era Beau Plan estate. The engaging and educational immersive experience takes visitors on a journey through the island’s colonial past, to modern-day sugar production, with the opportunity to taste its fruits. It encompasses the cultivation of sugar cane, the evolution of technology in sugar production and the economic and social impact of the sugar industry. Helicopter Flight

See the island’s landscapes, coral reefs, and turquoise waters from a different perspective. Several companies offer helicopter tours, providing a bird’s-eye view of Mauritius’ diverse geography — some offer private charters, allowing you to customise your itinerary or enjoy a more intimate experience suiting a special occasion. The duration of flights can vary, ranging from short tours of around 15 minutes to more extended excursions lasting an hour or more. They are also weather-dependent, so it’s worth considering the time of year for viability (you can find out more about seasonal changes further along in our guide).
