If you have been to the Maldives before (read our guide to the Maldives), lingered over a sunset cocktail and woken to the sound of the tide beneath your villa floor, the question is what comes next? The answer is Nala. Opened on 1 December 2025, Nala Maldives by Jawakara Islands is the latest addition to Crown & Champa Resorts’ portfolio. Set on a 10-hectare island in Lhaviyani Atoll, just 35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport. Adults only in format, and deliberately intimate.

What differentiates Nala from other hotel experiences in the Maldives is its dual-island concept. Guests have access not only to the seclusion of Nala itself, but also to the fuller roster of restaurants, sports facilities, and experiences at the neighbouring Jawakara Island, a convenient three minutes away by speedboat.

Nala’s 80 one-bedroom villas are arranged across four categories: Sunrise Beach Villas, Romantic Beach Villas, Sunset Beach Pool Villas, and Ocean Pool Villas. Tropical interiors give way to private porches, select villas run on solar-powered energy systems, and every category offers either a private pool or direct lagoon access. The views, in every direction, are uninterrupted.

The Sulha Spa has a Himalayan Salt Room, Red-Light Therapy Room, Sauna, and Cold Bath, sitting alongside a full menu of treatments: traditional massage, hydrotherapy, Ayurveda therapies, yoga, and organic skincare rituals. It is a programme that understands wellness not as an add-on, but as the point.

Three dining destinations are on offer. Velu presents international cuisine through live cooking stations, Milos brings a Mediterranean sensibility to the lagoon’s edge and Kumo offers vibrant Asian flavours for those who prefer spice over salt air.

On the water, kayaking, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, snorkelling, wakeboarding, and jet skiing are all on offer and below sea diving in partnership with Prodivers Maldives, with access to more than 60 sites across Lhaviyani Atoll and a full suite of PADI-certified courses. On land, tennis, padel, futsal, volleyball, badminton, pétanque, and a serious fitness centre. And via Jawakara a 9 or 18-hole golf course, complete with a driving range.

The Details

Rates at Nala Maldives by Jawakara start from £750. Reservations and further information are available at nalamaldives.com.

Autograph Collection Hotels has made its Maldivian debut with the opening of The Halcyon Private Isles, a design-led sanctuary inspired by the journeys of British explorer H.C.P. Bell and the myth of Alcyone. Spanning two untouched islands in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the resort is the epitome of barefoot luxury showcasing craftsmanship, intuitive service, and reflecting a deep connection to the ocean.

Approximately ninety minutes by seaplane from Malé in the Maldives, The Halcyon Private Isles evokes the “halcyon days”, a time of calm, golden light, and reflection. Across 38 expansive villas (ranging from 220 to 1,250 square metres), choose between beachside retreats, lagoon-suspended overwater villas, or the three-bedroom Halcyon Grand Estate with its private rooftop terrace. Every space features natural textures and panoramic sea views.

Each guest is paired with a dedicated Halcyon Butler, curating personalised itineraries that might include dawn yoga, marine-butler-led diving, sandbank picnics, or stargazing rituals. Culinary discovery is equally celebrated across four main venues: Thari for international and island-inspired fare, Yuzu blending Peruvian and Japanese flavours, The Firepit for flame-grilled dining under the stars, and Yapa Sunset Bar for creative cocktails and sashimi with South American influences.

Wellbeing takes place at the overwater Halcyon Spa, where sunrise yoga, sound therapy, and energy-balancing sessions align with the resort’s holistic rhythm of nature. Immersive experiences, led by marine biologists and resident experts, allow guests to connect meaningfully with the surrounding reefs and culture through diving, coral-planting, and eco-education for younger travellers.

The Halcyon Private Isles Maldives, Autograph Collection marks a milestone for Marriott Bonvoy in the region, embodying the brand’s belief that no two stays should ever be the same, only wonderfully individual.

W Maldives, the Original Wavemaker, has returned after a complete renovation, bringing with it cutting-edge design, playful new additions and that free-spirited energy it is known for. From award-winning marine life to private island escapades, from bold villa design to seamless, intuitive service, this is a resort that balances barefoot glamour with high-energy fun. It is as suited to a blissful retreat as it is to an adrenaline-filled escape.

Background and Concept

W Maldives takes the traditional charm of the Maldives and gives it a vibrant twist. The resort’s Whatever/Whenever service ethos is more than just a slogan. Guests can design their own bespoke moments, whether it is a night on a private island, a fully tailored spa day or a romantic dinner under the stars, and the team will make it happen to the highest standard.

I could message the team at any time on WhatsApp. When I accidentally dropped my phone and tripod off my villa’s pool deck, a quick SOS had the wonderful Ishara at my door within minutes to retrieve it. He even returned moments later with a bag of rice to help dry it out. This intuitive, thoughtful approach sums up the W Maldives experience. Nothing is too much trouble and it is all delivered with genuine warmth.

The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, with management as approachable as the front of house team. You will find pockets of peace and calm as easily as you will find DJ sets, sundowners and lively gatherings. The staff are every bit as memorable as the scenery, always smiling and genuinely making sure each guest feels special. Being greeted by name and asked how your day has been might seem small, but it makes a big difference and is one of the reasons this property stands out as a jewel in Marriott’s Maldivian portfolio.

Location

Set on heart-shaped Fesdu Island in the North Ari Atoll, the resort is a 25-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport with Trans Maldivian Airways. The journey is a treat in itself, offering a bird’s eye view of scattered atolls, shifting sandbanks and endless shades of blue. From the moment you check in at the seaplane terminal lounge to the moment the aircraft skims across the lagoon on landing, the sense of arrival is unforgettable.

Its position in one of the Maldives’ richest marine environments means the house reef is accessible directly from the beach or villa steps. The resort is playful, energetic and calm all at once, with each mood perfectly balanced. Mornings often began with a walk around the island, pausing to say hello to George, the resident heron, who became a quiet and comforting presence during my stay.

Food and Drink

Dining at W Maldives is as much about setting and atmosphere as it is about flavour. Every restaurant makes the most of the island’s views, whether you are perched above the reef, sitting barefoot in the sand or gathered around a poolside table.

Kitchen is the resort’s all-day dining spot with an open plan layout and live cooking stations. Mornings begin with freshly baked pastries, tropical fruits and eggs made to order, while evenings bring an international menu that blends familiar comfort dishes with local touches.

  • FISH is the culinary highlight, an overwater restaurant that champions an ocean to table approach. Much of the seafood is line-caught that day and prepared with creative flair. Dining here under the stars, with the sound of the water below, feels romantic and refined.
  • FIRE takes its inspiration from the art of barbecue, offering grilled meats and seafood in a relaxed beach setting. Guests can dine with their feet in the sand and a backdrop of flickering torches.
  • SIP is the place for a sunset ritual. Its circular deck sits above the lagoon and serves Nikkei-inspired small plates alongside a cocktail list that is inventive and colourful. Watching the sun sink into the horizon here is a must.
  • WET Deck brings together the social side of the resort with a swim-up bar, poolside seating and a menu of tapas-style bites, fresh salads and tropical drinks. Music plays throughout the day, creating a lively yet relaxed scene.

For an extra special occasion, the resort offers private dining experiences ranging from sandbank picnics to in-villa chef service.

One of my personal highlights was the floating breakfast. Some may see it as purely for photos, but there is something very special about enjoying a beautifully prepared breakfast in your own pool, looking out across the lagoon. Perfectly poached eggs, tropical juice and the quiet of the morning made it one to remember.

Guest Rooms and Suites

All 77 villas have been redesigned as part of the renovation, each with a private plunge pool, direct access to the beach or lagoon, and interiors inspired by the island’s natural surroundings. Beach Villas draw from mangrove tones, while Overwater Villas take cues from whale shark patterns.

The new Oasis Two Bedroom Beach Villas are standout additions, complete with spacious decks, games tables and a two-storey water slide into the pool. I had to try it. As if flying into the Maldivian bushes on my first attempt was not enough adrenaline for one morning, I climbed back up for another go. Equal parts thrilling and hilarious, it is a detail that sums up the resort’s playful spirit.

My Villa During My Stay

I stayed in a Premier Overwater One Bedroom Villa, where every design detail nodded to the sea. Whale shark rugs, fish scale wall textures and wardrobes fading in a sunset ombré created a sense of place. The centrepiece bathroom featured a striking clear blue bathtub that matched the lagoon beyond.

Outside was my own private cabana, a sea urchin-inspired swinging seat, sun loungers, an infinity pool and an outdoor shower. Few pleasures compare to stepping back into your private villa and slipping into the still waters of your own pool, a serene sanctuary that feels entirely your own. Attention to detail was faultless, and the evening turndown service felt like a small ceremony in itself after hot days exploring the island.

Other Facilities

  • AWAY Spa offers overwater treatment rooms and steam facilities. My session with therapist Yangchen began with a refreshing welcome drink and time in the steam room. I was then led to the open-air spa deck over the sea for a traditional foot ritual using lavender oil, orange spray, coconut scrub, lime for detoxification and coconut milk water to rinse. The 60-minute full-body massage that followed was bliss.
  • FIT Gym has ocean-facing equipment and is open 24 hours, but it is more than just a place to lift weights. The resort runs a schedule of fitness classes for all levels, from sunrise yoga on an open deck to energising HIIT circuits, core conditioning, and functional training sessions. Guests can also join stretching, mobility or guided meditation classes for something more restorative. Every class is small and personalised, allowing the instructor to adapt to individual needs, making it easy to keep your fitness routine on track or try something completely new.
  • WAVE Watersports Centre offers everything from diving and parasailing to yacht trips. The house reef, however, is the star attraction. Snorkelling with my instructor Adhil was a personal highlight. The resort’s win for Best House Reef at the Travel + Leisure Asia Awards 2025 is well deserved. We glided past coral gardens teeming with fish, spotted eagle rays and met Bob, the resident sea turtle, before being joined by needlefish darting around us. It was the most spectacular reef I have seen in the Maldives.

You may also choose to charter the resort’s private yacht, Escape, for a sunset sail, an intimate dinner or even an overnight ocean escape. Alternatively, hop on a dhoni for island-hopping, fishing or dolphin-spotting excursions.

We also spent an evening on the resort’s private island, Gaathafushi. Sundowners, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails by candlelight on bean bags, with soft music in the background, made for a night like no other. Guests can also stay overnight in an open-air cabana for the ultimate castaway experience.

USPs

  • Recently renovated with fresh design and playful new additions
  • Water slide equipped two-bedroom villas
  • Award-winning house reef
  • Exceptional, intuitive service
  • Private island experiences on Gaathafushi

TLE Top Tips

  • Book a Premier Overwater Villa for ocean views and a sense of privacy
  • Try the water slide in the Oasis Two Bedroom Beach Villa, at least twice
  • Do not miss a floating breakfast for the ultimate treat
  • Spend an evening on Gaathafushi for a memory you will talk about for years
  • Snorkel the house reef with a guide to meet its most famous resident, Bob the turtle

Final Thoughts

From sunrise walks with George the heron to sliding into my pool from a two-storey deck, from dancing needlefish on the reef to candlelit cocktails on a private island, W Maldives was as much about moments as it was about luxury. Snorkelling alongside Bob, the resident sea turtle, eagle rays and shoals of colourful fish was a reminder of how extraordinary this setting is. The dining could keep you happily on the island for weeks, with each venue offering its own atmosphere, from the elegance of FISH to the barefoot charm of FIRE and the lively energy of WET Deck. Even the simplest meals, like breakfast at Kitchen or a floating feast in my villa pool, felt elevated by the setting and service.

The Whatever/Whenever concept is not just a clever brand line; it works in practice. Whether it was rescuing my phone from the depths of the pool deck, arranging a last-minute spa session, or setting up an evening on a private island, the team anticipated what I needed before I had even asked.

W Maldives has the beauty you expect from the Maldives, but also an energy, warmth and sense of fun that makes it stand out. This is a resort that knows how to deliver high style and high spirits in equal measure, whether you are here for romance, relaxation or a little adrenaline. It is not just a place to stay, it is a place to live fully in the moment, and it does so flawlessly.

Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius, reopens with renewed elegance, offering a soulful island experience defined by colour, culture, and curated luxury.

With that introduction, I’m taking poetic license from the song commissioned by Shangri-la Le Touessrok, Mauritius to mark the resort’s reopening after a four-month renovation in October 2024. Written and performed by local father-and-daughter team Toto and Fiora Lebrasse, ‘Come Home’ welcomes back returning guests and invites new ones to experience the legendary moments created here. “Come home to Le Touessrok, living in Shangri-la style/ Where we fill your world with colour, add a service with a smile.” With simple lyrics and heartfelt delivery, the song captures the resort’s essence: joyful, personal, and warmly familiar.

As I lunch with Bernard Ramen, Director of Sales and Marketing, I reflect on how I’ve witnessed this resort’s evolution – first as Le Touessrok, then under Shangri-La, and now reimagined anew. The transformation balances refreshed spaces with the enduring warmth and authenticity that guests have always treasured.

Lunch at Coco’s, the newly revived beach restaurant set at the heart of the resort, was a great way to start. With glorious sea views, a relaxed yet refined decor enhanced with shades of yellow and blue, Coco’s offers a taste of Mauritian hospitality through fresh, seasonal dishes and, of course, its signature Ti Punch.

“We wanted this to feel like a Mauritian beach house,” says Ramen, pointing out dodo motifs that nod to local heritage.

The name itself is a local term of endearment related to the coconut fruit but is also being used by locals to express their affection and love to people,” Ramen explains. “It’s the perfect name for this relaxed setting that introduces a sense of the French Riviera – Mediterranean modernity.”

Coco’s golden hour is a highlight – cocktails by the Beach Bar, live local music and the unbeatable sunset glow. “Supporting local musicians, keeping this part of our culture, is essential for us. Artists like Toto are part of the reason guests keep returning,” says Ramen.

The resort has a new look and feel – from menus to furniture to interiors – but the soul remains. “It’s good to evolve while keeping the legacy alive. Many staff have worked here for decades – welcoming guests like family, passing down their passion and service culture,” he adds.

Interior designer Asmaa Said of Odd Duck Design has elevated the spaces with inspiration drawn from the island’s natural beauty – from the earthy tones of Chamarel to the vibrant flora. Guest rooms are themed Coral, Hibiscus, or Frangipani, each evoking native elements in a subtle, soothing palette.

Rooms, suites, and villas now feel more tranquil and luxurious than ever. The Coral and Hibiscus rooms offer a sense of calm and comfort, with soft natural light and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. The Hibiscus Signature Beachfront Suites, at 130sqm, are ideal for families, with direct beach access and expansive terraces. For the ultimate escape, the three-bedroom beach villas provide privacy, space, and refined seaside living.

Dining across the resort has been reimagined too. From exclusive Friday night dining in the Chef’s Garden to home-style curries prepared by local mamas and Dine by Design evenings in secluded corners of the resort, there’s something for every palate. Executive Chef Luca Gallo cooks at those intimate gatherings at Il Giardino – his risotto and tiramisu are the best I’ve tasted.

TSK – Touessrok Soul Kitchen – has replaced Le Bazar as the culinary hub. Designed for all-day dining, TSK combines international techniques with Mauritian ingredients in a bright, versatile setting that works for everything from breakfast gatherings to lively dinners.

Safran’s menu is a love letter to India and features some of my favourite dishes. Meanwhile, Kushi is a Japanese hideaway where Chef Harry’s omakase selection is the perfect introduction to a varied menu.

Vinoteca, the resort’s curated wine cellar, is home to over 450 labels, emphasising biodynamic selections and rare finds. Whether pairing wines with dinner at TSK or browsing for a bottle to enjoy at sunset, the experience is tailored to personal taste.

Beyond the accommodation and dining, the essence of Le Touessrok lies in its location: six beaches spread across four kilometres of untouched shoreline, plus access only for guests via a short boat ride to Ilot Mangénie, the resort’s private island – a place to soak up the sun in peaceful seclusion. Make the most of butler service at your cabana and indulge in the signature truffle pizza and your preferred tipple. Stay as long as you like – just don’t miss the last ferry!

The sheltered lagoon that laps the resort’s shores is also impressive, not only for its proximity to one of the best snorkelling spots I’ve discovered along the east coast. You can also stand on the sandbanks to readjust your mask and get your bearings. The area is preserved, so motorised watersports are limited and mostly directed to nearby Ile Aux Cerfs.

Wellness is another focus. Chi, The Spa offers holistic rituals and treatments to reset and renew, while morning paddleboarding or beach yoga sessions provide a connection to the land and sea. For couples, the resort remains a top choice for honeymoons and romantic getaways, with private dinners on the beach, spa experiences for two, and accommodations designed to inspire connection.

Following its thoughtful renovation, Shangri-La Le Touessrok emerges more rooted, more refined, and more attuned to today’s traveller. Whether you’re seeking solitude, celebration, or soulful connection, there’s a place for you here.

Guests are encouraged to leave their shoes behind and navigate the island barefoot to physically connect with the island surroundings.

Inspired by the island’s natural elements, the resort’s architecture and design incorporate traditional Maldivian aesthetics, using modern, eco-conscious construction techniques, seamlessly blending contemporary luxury and environmental sustainability. Through the use of locally sourced materials, and integrated renewable energy solutions, their goal to preserve the pristine beauty of the Maldives never interferes with guest comfort, instead it enhances the immersive, authentic experience available. This dedication to sustainability is not just a feature of the resort, but a call to action for all who visit, inspiring a sense of responsibility and respect for the natural world.

Wellness is a top priority for The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, and a host of amenities and facilities ensure guests are enriched through the brand’s six pillars of well-being: Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Feel Well, Work Well, and Play Well. From the Eat Well Wellness Menu to the brand’s award-winning Heavenly® Beds in each room, you are sure to leave the resort feeling fully refreshed.

Location

Conveniently located in the breathtaking crystal clear waters of Miriandhoo Island, the resort can be reached via a scenic seaplane (this experience is not to be missed), which takes 25 minutes from the main airport in the Maldives, Male.

Food and Drink

With one of their six pillars being ‘Eat Well’, the resort boasts a range of dining venues for guests to nourish and indulge in. The dining options are truly exceptional, offering a diverse range of cuisines to suit every palate. From fresh seafood at the Island Kitchen to Asian-inspired dishes at Hawker, there’s something for everyone. The resort also offers a variety of dining experiences, including private beach dinners and sunset cruises, adding a touch of romance to the culinary offerings. Each dining venue has its unique charm and signature dishes, providing a delightful culinary journey for guests.

Guests can choose from four unique dining options, three restaurants, and a beautiful elevated bar to enjoy some of the best sunsets in the Maldives.

The Pearl

With a focus on freshly caught seafood and locally sourced ingredients, The Pearl offers guests a delightfully indulgent dining experience. The team of talented chefs use traditional Japanese recipes to create beautiful meals, proving that some traditions should never be broken. The attentive, personalised service is as incredible as the over-water location.

Hawker

Surrounded by palm trees with stunning ocean views, Hawker is a vibrant and casual venue that encourages relaxation. The open kitchen offers guests a glimpse behind the scenes as the chefs get to work on the gorgeous Asian fusion street foods, combining the authentic tastes of Asia with flavours from across the globe.

Island Kitchen

Serving up international cuisine, the Island Kitchen chefs stick to the Westin Eat Well philosophy to create meals that are as nutritious as they are delicious. This all day dining venue is located next to the resort’s swimming pool area meaning guests don’t have to go far to fuel up.

Sunset Bar

As the name suggests, this is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail as colourful as the sunset. Guests can relax with an expertly crafted drink as the day fades into the night. Their tapas selection does not disappoint, offering the perfect pick-me-up until dinner. The carefully curated music playlists help enhance the laid-back, relaxing vibes.

Floating Breakfast

The resort’s unique floating breakfast offering is one for your breakfast bucket list. We enjoyed this decadent, Instagram-worthy experience during our stay and it was such a treat.  Our lovely host arrived with the beautiful breakfast at our chosen time and carefully set it up for us. Complete with homemade pastries, fresh fruit, fruit juices and a cooked breakfast; all we had to do was pull on our swimwear and dive in.

Destination Dining

The resort is always happy to accommodate special requests for guests seeking unique, intimate dining experiences, no matter how big or small. Our trip coincided with our wedding anniversary, and we were able to celebrate in style with a private beach dinner. Set against the natural beauty of the Maldives, the backdrop adds an element of adventure and excitement that makes your meal even more memorable.

Rooms, Suites & Villas

The resort features 69 spacious villas, thoughtfully designed on an island reef. With eight different villa categories ranging from 140 sqm to 508 sqm, guests are truly spoilt for choice. Each villa comes with a private pool Whether guests opt for a cosy beach villa pool room, or the exclusive 2 bedroom Heavenly Beach Residence, both luxury and comfort are guaranteed. Every room offers beautiful ocean views, their signature Heavenly bed and Heavenly bath, and high-speed internet access – perfect for those combining work and play.

Each villa is designed to reflect the natural beauty surrounding them, with modern, minimalist interiors, lots of wood elements, and a simple black and white colour palette to contrast the vibrant colours of the surrounding scenery.

Our Overwater Villa

We were blown away by our stay in one of the stunning overwater villas. The contemporary but ethically and naturally sourced villas are spacious and filled with natural light. With all the doors open, it was easy to become one with the ocean, while still feeling the privacy and personal touches of the villa.

The bed and bath truly lived up to their Heavenly name, creating the perfect space to relax and soothe tired muscles. The Sleep Well lavender balm on our bed each evening was a beautiful touch. Our villa had a spacious, private deck that offered direct sea access, and our private swimming pool. The overwater villas all feature glass floor panels, allowing guests to observe the marine life below – yet another reason to book one of these incredible villas.

Other Facilities

PADI-certified Dive Centre

The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo also boasts an exceptional dive centre, catering to beginners and experienced divers. The resort’s prime location amidst the vibrant marine life of the Maldives makes it an ideal destination for diving enthusiasts. Whether exploring colourful coral reefs, encountering majestic manta rays, or discovering underwater shipwrecks, the dive centre offers a variety of dive excursions and courses led by experienced instructors.

Heavenly Spa by Westin

The tranquil Heavenly Spa by Westin offers three single treatment rooms, and two couples’ treatment rooms, one of which is equipped with a jacuzzi offering the most romantic of experiences to guests. All of the treatment rooms are perched over the water and feature glass floors, to allow guests to connect with the ocean and truly relax. As the ocean washed away my restless mind, the amazing spa team worked wonders on my knotted muscles, and by the time I left the spa I felt pampered and a decade younger.

The spa offers a range of treatments, from traditional massages to signature spa rituals, all designed to rejuvenate the body and mind. For guests who don’t want to step foot outside their beautiful villa, the spa team provides in-villa services to create the most indulgent of experiences.

Unique Selling Points:

  • There are spacious private decks with swimming pools with every villa.
  • Enjoy unique excursions such as swimming with sharks and manta rays, and soak up the beauty of the amazing UNESCO Biosphere reserve.
  • Snorkelers and divers can discover over 250 species of coral and diverse marine life in the resort’s house reef.
  • The friendly resort staff will ensure your stay is special and memorable, and no request is ever too big or small. Whether you’d like to renew your vows or set up a romantic beach picnic on a sandbank, the expert teams at The Westin Maldives will be happy to assist.
  • The resort has one of the best-equipped fitness programs in the Maldives with its signature WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio. Guests who want to keep fit and take in the ocean air can work out in the newly built outdoor gym, and participate in various enriching workouts, including yoga, runWESTIN, tennis, volleyball and football.

TLE Top Tips:

Take time to explore once in a lifetime excursions available, like swimming with Manta Rays

Being able to swim with the manta rays was one of the many highlights of my stay. The resort’s prime location in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the Baa Atoll provides unparalleled access to the natural beauty and wonders, allowing guests to embark on guided excursions to encounter these graceful creatures in their natural habitat. It’s an awe-inspiring and humbling experience that offers a rare glimpse into the beauty and grace of marine life.

Rise with the sun

Waking up early on holiday may sound like a chore, but the sunrises on the island are not to be missed. We spent our mornings waking before sunrise and walking around the island soaking in the morning glow. Remember to take a camera with you, as you will get the best shots at this time of the morning. The white powdery sand and the warm glow of the sun offer the best backdrop for picture-perfect portraits and luscious landscapes.

Sunsets in style

Relax as the sun sets on the perfect day with a hand-crafted cocktail at the Sunset Bar. This chilled space invites you to settle into a cosy bean bag chair and watch the world go by the day turns to night.

Up the romance

Whether you’re celebrating a special anniversary, birthday or honeymoon, the team at the resort are there to assist you with planning something memorable. I particularly enjoyed the romantic bubble bath service, where I was surprised by a luxurious bath filled with fresh flowers and a glass of champagne. Soaking in the freestanding tub while looking out at the ocean as the sun set over our villa is a memory I’ll never forget.

Final thoughts

Guests can tailor their Maldivian experience to suit their preferences, and with the spa, sports, dining, and diving centre offerings, there is something for everyone at The Westin, Maldives.

The natural beauty of the island, the resort’s sustainability initiatives, and the warm, friendly staff made it a truly special place to visit. Whether you’re seeking to relax and fresh, or would rather enjoy an adrenaline fuelled adventure, this extraordinary island retreat has it all.

Our Villa

Our stay in the Duplex Beach Pool Villa was nothing short of enchanting, conveniently nestled just a few steps from the crystal-clear sea and mere minutes from the vibrant array of amenities and activities the island has to offer.

Spanning an impressive 3,067 square feet, the duplex villa was spacious while still maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere. The bathroom was truly a masterpiece—the largest we’ve ever experienced—complete with a luxurious soaking tub that beckoned to us after sun-soaked days. The lavish products from The Aromatherapy Associates added an extra layer of indulgence, while thoughtful touches such as delightful daily treats, artistic messages crafted from palm leaves on our bed, and fresh bath salts replenished each day made our experience feel truly personalised. Our attentive Thakuru was always just a WhatsApp message away anticipating our needs with an almost magical instinct.

The private deck and pool were undoubtedly the pièce de résistance, providing an intimate outdoor space that created the perfect backdrop for lounging, swimming, and soaking in the lush tropical surroundings, it truly felt like a serene sanctuary where every moment was infused with blissful tranquillity.

Spa by JW

The resort’s tranquil spa is a true oasis consisting of seven treatment suites, each accompanied by breathtaking views of the ocean. Step into the serene lounge where a friendly member of the spa team will greet you with a refreshing drink infused with herbs handpicked from their own JW Garden, with their beautiful botanical smells lingering throughout the spa area.

The spa team will guide you as you choose an Aromatherapy Associates oil based on your desired post-treatment feeling. I opted for the ‘De-stress’ blend, a soothing infusion of black pepper, ginger, lavender, and rosemary. This gentle concoction worked wonders in melting away the tension from my travels, leaving me in a state of bliss.

Each treatment is meticulously crafted to address your individual needs. Guests can ‘Re-energize’ with an invigorating restorative massage that rejuvenates tired muscles and harmonises energy flow, or indulge in the ‘Jet Lag Cure’ that employs essential oils to awaken the senses and help you acclimate to your new surroundings. Each treatment offers a transformative journey with four distinctive benefits – Calm, Indulge, Invigorate, and Renew.

Colin and I enjoyed an intimate couples massage in the deluxe treatment suite, which provided us with exclusive access to a steam room, an invigorating ice room, and a refreshing plunge pool. Our private couples treatment room had stunning ocean views that enhanced the serene experience even further.

In addition to its luxurious treatments, Spa by JW offers a modern, state-of-the-art gym perched over the water, along with an open-air yoga pavilion. Guests have the opportunity to join sunrise or sunset yoga sessions or partake in guided meditation with the resort’s wellness instructor, while surrounded by some of the island’s most breathtaking views.

Dedicated Kids Club and Teen Lounge

The remarkable staff is dedicated to ensuring that every guest, young and old, has an unforgettable holiday experience. The kids’ facilities here are as spectacular as the resort itself, leaving plenty of time for the adults to unwind while the kids are kept happily occupied.

The expansive kids’ club and teen lounge rank among the largest facilities in the Maldives, offering an incredible variety of immersive experiences and engaging activities every day. We particularly enjoyed our time in the clear kayaks, gliding across the waters surrounded by stunning scenery and amazing views of the marine life below. Every moment became a picture-perfect opportunity, ideal for capturing those Instagram-worthy snapshots to remember our amazing adventures.

JW Garden

The 3,600 square foot garden is a new addition to the island, representing the resort’s deep passion for sustainability and natural beauty. Inspired by Alice Marriott’s love for gardening, it is a tranquil oasis where guests can wander through the surrounding foliage and fragrant herbs at their leisure, soaking up the serenity.

The luxurious spa is the perfect way to unwind and restore, while the world-class diving facilities are a great option for adrenaline-seeking souls.

TLE Top Tips

Start the day off right in the privacy of your own villa, and wake up with a delicious, delivered floating breakfast, set up in your villa pool. We had the most amazing experience with our floating breakfast. Avocado toast, eggs Benedict, delicious oats, fruit and of course some fizz made for the perfect start to our day.

For those with a love for wildlife, dolphin watching provides a magical experience, while fishing trips allow you to reel in your own catch amidst the serene waters.

The JW Garden also offers a memorable ‘Garden-to-Glass’ cocktail-making experience. Their expert mixologist Rojina worked with our selection of fresh herbs from the garden in an array of bespoke cocktails tailored to our tastes. Each sip celebrated the sustainability of the garden.

Final thoughts

The JW Marriott Resort and Spa provided us with an unforgettable, relaxing experience. From our first moment there, we were enveloped in luxury, with every detail thoughtfully curated for guest comfort. The stunning surroundings, combined with the top-notch amenities created a perfect oasis for rest and rejuvenation.

Each day brought new adventures exploring the vibrant local culture, and exciting activities on offer, and we cherished the tranquil moments together, whether that was in the villa pool or indulging in a dining experience.

Barefoot bliss is a given at Sun Siyam Resorts, five private island luxury properties in the Maldives, each with their individual attractions. But as all welcome guests with the warm and nothing-is-too-much-trouble hospitality famous on these paradise islands, it’s hard to make a choice. Sun Siyam Iru Veli is a premium private pool getaway for indulgent escapes; Sun Siyam Vilu Reef is a boutique hideaway, ideal for two; Siyam World is full of never-seen-before surprises; Sun Siyam Iru Fushi suits solos to families in acres of heaven on earth; while Sun Siyam Olhuveli offers more affordable all-inclusive adventure, being the only four-star resort in the otherwise five-star group. Sun Siyam Iru Veli seemed ideal for my escape with friends to a special sand, sea, sun, spa and snorkel sanctuary, but if you can’t narrow it down, why not choose a two-centre trip, or more?

Look & Feel

Circling Sun Siyam Iru Veli from above in our seaplane, first impressions are the whitest sand, the bluest sea and greenest swaying palm trees. Coming into land in a rainbow of spray, I’d never seen an ‘international airport’ quite like it – a tiny, floating quay in the middle of the iridescent Indian Ocean. Yet with no customs or immigration to pass through and helpful seaplane pilots and speedboat crew to transfer our luggage, we were soon aboard for the hop, skip and jump by boat to shore where a rapturous musical cacophony with Bodu Beru drums and singing welcomed us to our very own Sun Siyam Iru Veli island. Our ambassador Rilwan already knew our names off by heart and cheerfully greeted us individually as we clambered eagerly into the electric buggy. Whisked to Chemistry Bar for chilled towels, refreshing coconut juice served in the husk and nibbles of fruit kebabs and banana chips, it’s the start you dream of to a much-anticipated tropical oasis.

Location

On the map, the Maldives are marked as a cluster of 26 pinprick atolls south of Sri Lanka (home to the recently-opened Sun Siyam Pasikudah boutique beach resort) and north of the Seychelles. Sun Siyam Iru Veli is located within a private lagoon in the South Nilandhe Atoll, about a 40-minute scenic seaplane flight from the capital Malé, where international flights touch down on arrival.

Getting There

Qatar Airways flies to Malé via Doha from London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Business class passengers (read review here) have access to world-class lounges such as Qatar Airways’ newest The Garden at Hama International Airport, Doha (read our review here), ranked Best Airport in the World 2024 by Skytrax.  Once in Malé, guests of Sun Siyam Resorts can relax pre-departure in the private lounge at Velana Airport’s modern seaplane terminal. Our seaplane transfer to Sun Siyam Iru Veli was with Trans Maldivian Airways. Pre-book airport parking, hotels, lounges and transfers with UK market leader Holiday Extras.

Suites & Villas

In an intimate setting of just 125 villas, all with pools, choose from sunrise or sunset Beach or Water Villas. Beach Villas have a large sundeck and private pool with your very own stretch of silky white sands to sink your toes into. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors and an outdoor bathroom with separate rainfall shower and freestanding bath ensure plenty of light and uninterrupted sea views. There is a choice of size from Family to Grand suitable for up to three adults/ two adults and two children to the Beach Residences (one or two bedroom) which feature a large lounge, expansive terrace and elevated views, sleeping a maximum of six adults.

The Water Villas are contemporary in design with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over private plunge pools and decks to the sea. A king-size bedroom with desk, dressing table and plenty of storage leads to a spacious bathroom with free-standing tub and separate walk-in rain shower. Fully furnished outdoor decks all feature steps down to the lagoon for easy snorkelling on the sheltered house reef. A choice of size ranges from an Ocean Villa sleeping up to three adults/ two adults and two children to a two-bedroom Ocean Residence sleeping a maximum of six adults/ four adults and two children with an entrance hallway leading to a comfortable lounge and dining room as well as king-size bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on each side.

My Overwater Villa

My Dolphin Ocean Villa definitely had the wow factor with walk-in panoramas of the private pool and ocean beyond. A friendly ‘Welcome Home’ message on the bed below a turtle-shaped from grasses was a nice touch – as was the Champagne on ice, hand-made chocolates and complimentary minibar. These villas are so named as they have a prized, front-row setting for watching dolphins swim past each day, whether at dawn or dusk – definitely a star attraction. From my bathtub, thoughtfully filled for me with scented bubbles and fresh flower petals on one evening by my room stewards, I watched a heron preen himself on deck. More surprises included a loo with a view of the lagoon below – although careful screening safely retained my modesty – and a quirky platform ‘beach’ built into the deck. But my favourite spot was cooling in the plunge pool while watching dazzling shoals swim by.

Breakfast

I loved the Maldivian breakfasts best in the buffet-style Aqua Orange which served every cuisine you could wish for. I’d ask for fresh, local mango and passion fruit to be sliced for me, while aromatic curries, tuna fish kulhafila salads and flatbreads made a change from porridge back home! Our floating breakfast was a fabulous first – a tray overflowing with pastries, fruit and even bacon and pancakes with maple syrup brought to my villa and launched in my plunge pool while I sat and enjoyed it all in my swimsuit!

Restaurants

A feast for the eyes, Aqua Orange serves an all-day tasty buffet from breakfast and lunch to delicious themed dinners with stunning lagoon views, tables on the beach and a daily-changing menu. If you prefer waiter service, then Grouper Grill specialises in mouth-watering seafood and fish, as well as prime steaks at lunch or dinner; while Roma is a Mediterranean restaurant with sea views, homemade pasta and tropical-inspired panna cotta. For extra special occasions, the team can organise a romantic dinner on the beach or magical barbecue and cinema experience under the stars, while we relished a Maldivian Cookery Class with Chef Aafaag, especially when we lunched on the fresh dishes prepared using spices, grated coconut and other locally-grown ingredients completely new to us.

Bars

Chemistry Bar is at the heart of the resort – a great place to meet and socialise for a coffee, mocktail or cocktail from expert baristas and mixologists. There’s also a pool table and evening entertainment such as karaoke or live music. We thoroughly enjoyed a cocktail-making class one evening, drinking the fruits of our labours, of course. At Fresh Water, where lively weekly pool parties are celebrated, sip freshly squeezed juices or pina coladas served to your cabana, while the Wine Cellar is ideal for private group dinners, tastings and pairings of the world’s finest vintages and Champagnes.

Spa & Wellness

The sensory-scented signature massage at Sun Siyam Iru Veli Ocean Spa will forever live in my memory. For not only was the overwater pavilion with ocean views and relaxing sounds of lapping water a cocoon of calm, but as I lay face down on the massage bed, I could even watch the live aquarium of fish in the lagoon below through a glass floor. What I’ll never forget are not just my expert therapist Wayan’s soothing ways to unknot muscles, but the fact that I saw a shark – yes, a shark – nonchalantly swim past, oblivious to the effect he was having on my heart rate above! Reassuringly, it was a non-woman-eating, blacktip reef shark that gently cruises the Maldives’ shallow waters without ever taking a bite out of unsuspecting tourists, but I still preferred spying him from this safe sanctuary rather than while snorkelling!

The hydrotherapy suite with its sauna, steam room and outdoor whirlpool was also blissful for relaxation – even when a sudden tropical downpour gave us a real rainfall shower! There is allegedly a well-equipped fitness centre (if you think spending time at a gym is worthwhile in Paradise); tennis courts; yoga and aqua qigong, as well as a clinic for any emergencies. My idea of unwinding is sunbathing on a talcum powder beach, reading a good book on a hammock or admiring spectacular sunsets, cocktail in hand!

Activities

I found a painless way to keep fit here is to swim and snorkel, feeling safe in our group and finding it much easier than expected (wear a lifejacket if you’re not a strong swimmer). It’s definitely recommended for the vibrant coral gardens, turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and 1,100 species of fish you can spot! Water sports are also popular, from canoeing or windsurfing to jet skiing or new, electrically-powered Seabobs which propel you through the water more quickly than fins. The SSI dive centre will guide budding beginners to the more experienced and intrepid, with off-shore shipwrecks to explore. Younger guests will make friends at the Turtle Kids Club with daily activities from breakfast until bedtime.

Excursions

Complimentary excursions are part of a Premium, All-inclusive Signature Plan and there are plenty to choose from. Our top picks were a Guided Snorkelling Safari (daytime or blue light with a marine biologist), Local Island Discovery and Lucky Dolphin Sunset Cruise. Sun Siyam Resorts is also keen to preserve the country’s rich heritage, with cultural shows and demonstrations of local crafts and traditions such as cookery classes or making coconut oil.

Final Thoughts

Sun Siyam Resorts is proudly Maldivian owned and the hospitality is second to none, with friendly, smiling staff and attentive ambassadors just a WhatsApp away for lifts to restaurants or any other request. When climate change could have a catastrophic effect on the vulnerable coral atolls, it’s reassuring that the award-winning Sun Siyam Cares programme strives for a light carbon footprint. A dedicated sustainability project manager and marine biologists aim to protect the fragile archipelago, engaging holidaymakers and islanders in eco-friendly initiatives like planting coral nurseries and trees, as well as energy saving, recycling and supporting the local community. On this glorious castaway island, you’re encouraged to kick off your shoes and relax, left to do as much or as little as you please in your own time and at your own pace. It’s a place where the extraordinary can happen – like seeing a pod of dolphins at sunrise, being left in awe as gentle giant whale sharks cruise by or being surprised by the sight of a reef shark from your massage bed!

Mauritius is not just an idyllic luxury holiday getaway offering pristine beaches, verdant landscapes, and turquoise waters, it is also a thriving community that blends ultra modern convenience with natural beauty. Known for its dynamic economy supported by high-quality infrastructure and a mix of English and French cultural elements, the island offers a seamless blend of work and leisure in a paradisiacal setting. The Luxury Editor was recently invited to visit to learn about Anahita Mauritius’ latest property develeopment. Read on to find out more.

Introducing Anahita Beau Champ

Located between verdant mountains and a crystal-clear lagoon, Anahita Mauritius offers a breathtaking location on the pristine East coast of Mauritius. Since its inception in 2008, the Anahita Golf Resort (read our review here) has covered 213 hectares and is recognised as a premier residential and leisure estate in the Indian Ocean, featuring a signature golf course designed by Ernie Els, and two five-star hotels.

In 2023, the resort started its expansion with the introduction of Anahita Beau Champ, a 118-hectare development that embraces a holistic luxury rural lifestyle This new project (outline 1 in the image below) will not only introduce additional residential options but will also provide a suite of high-quality services and amenities to enhance the lifestyle of both future residents and the local community on the East coast.

A Community Rooted in History and Culture

The historical essence of the land is being preserved through rehabilitated heritage sites, transforming old molasses tanks and sugar factories into vibrant community hubs like Zeste, a café and deli that offers locally sourced foods and a social space for residents.

Sustainable Development at Its Core

The development is dedicated to sustainable initiatives, guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, encapsulated in its three strategic pillars: “SmartEst, HealthiEst, GreenEst”. The project is prioritising renewable energy and has earned the WELL Community pre-certification to underscore its commitment to a healthy living environment.

The SmartEst pillar includes initiatives like smart agriculture, adaptive reuse, economic opportunities in innovation and tourism, electric mobility, mixed-use neighbourhoods, water and energy efficiency, and environmental conservation through practices like waste recycling and rainwater harvesting, all aimed at creating a productive and sustainable community at the heart of the community.

Embracing Heritage and Nature

At Anahita Beau Champ, meticulous landscape design is employed to conserve the area’s natural heritage and foster a genuine atmosphere conducive to tranquillity and well-being.

Central to the development is the 5-hectare agricultural area along a creek, dedicated to sustainable farming practices. This approach yields a continuous supply of local fruits, vegetables, aromatic plants, and flowers, supported by meticulous soil management and planning.

The project’s philosophy emphasises a return to nature through daily activities that enhance well-being.

Preserving the Natural Environment

  • Palm Alley: This picturesque avenue, flanked by majestic palms along the canal, is the primary pedestrian thoroughfare. It is bordered by residential villas and spaces for leisure, providing a delightful outdoor experience.
  • Spring Park: Originating from a valley stream, this tranquil park is marked by a natural amphitheatre, historic freshwater prawn ponds, and areas cultivating vanilla, cocoa, and coffee. It offers a perfect spot for leisurely walks or relaxation amidst nature.

Reviving Historical Heritage

  • Historic Sites at Anahita Beau Champ: The estate’s rich history is celebrated through the preservation of its historical sites, enriching the locale with unique charm.
  • The Old Molasses Tanks – Zeste Café, Restaurant, and Deli: Enjoy a warm beverage and healthy dishes made from locally sourced produce, or pick up fresh produce directly from the estate’s orchards. Zeste provides a cosy setting for socialising, located in the renovated molasses tanks.
  • Zeste Pool: Situated among coconut trees, this pool is a refreshing retreat close to the restaurant, perfect for a swim surrounded by lush nature.
  • The Old Sugar Factory – The Factory: This revitalised historic building now serves as a dynamic center where visitors can shop, exercise, enjoy art, attend events, or relax with loved ones.

Coastal Leisure at Anahita Beau Champ

  • Amarela, Beach & Boat Club: Dine by the ocean, engage in watersports, relax on a sunbed to the soothing ocean sounds, or take a shuttle to Île aux Cerfs. Amarela offers a serene escape with full access to boating facilities, including a boat park and moorings, ensuring a delightful maritime experience.

First Residential Phase

The first phase of the development is called L’Écho des Champs and will consist of 7 villas, 12 apartments, 3 penthouses and 31 plots of serviced land.

Demera Villas

Meticulously designed, the villas integrate effortlessly with the estate’s lush environment, utilising natural materials like volcanic stone, wood, shingles, and thatch. This fusion of modern and traditional architectural styles adds to the appeal of these residences. The villas are offered in three distinct models, each tailored to the specific orientation and terrain of the site, positioned along the picturesque palm-lined path.

  • Demera Villa, Model 2 is bathed in sunlight throughout the day, with living areas oriented to the north and south. These villas provide stunning vistas of a small woodland and the palm avenue.
  • Demera Villa, Model 3 shares the architectural elements of Model 2 but occupies a slightly more compact area. The pool is situated perpendicular to the expansive terrace, offering a unique view of the lush tropical garden.
  • Demera Villa, Model 4 is crafted to maximise the enjoyment of the outdoors, with living spaces that open directly onto the garden, providing spectacular views.

Apartments are thoughtfully situated in various locations across the estate, spread out among several residential complexes and with their pitched roofs, seamlessly integrate into the landscaped surroundings. Details like terrace structures, railings, and metal staircases pay homage to the industrial design of a nearby historical factory, while the lush tropical gardens further enhance the architectural blend. L’Echo des Champs offers twelve apartments with two to three bedrooms, in addition to three spacious three-bedroom penthouses.

Serviced Land

Secure a plot at Anahita Beau Champ and create your ideal villa within your financial plan on a magnificent parcel of land, sizes ranging from 965 to 1,519 square meters. Select your preferred team of consultants and contractors to realise your vision, all while complying with the estate’s architectural and landscaping standards.

Amari at LUX* Belle Mare has been Chef Vineet Bhatia’s Mauritian home for a decade. A new look warranted a new menu to celebrate the resort’s reopening in October 2023 after a devastating fire, enabling him and his team to reimagine their culinary offering in an exceptional environment. The result is even more soothing for body, mind and soul than before, as Debbie Hathway finds out.

Derived from the Sanskrit (amar) meaning ‘immortal, eternal’, Amari at LUX* Belle Mare intertwines a culinary narrative bridging the flavours of India and Mauritius. Guided by the esteemed Vineet Bhatia MBE, hailed as the pioneer of modern Indian cuisine, the menu manifests his lifelong gastronomic odyssey. Rooted in diverse influences and underscored by the profound belief in food as a universal language fostering connections, Amari embodies Chef Vineet’s enduring passion for spices and flavours and LUX* Resorts’ “spirited, creative, caring, and tasteful hospitality brand [established] to help people celebrate life.”

I met Vineet at another luxury resort in Mauritius before opening Amari, and our paths have crossed many times since. We chatted then over a searing hot tandoor oven as he baked naan bread for guests eager to sample his fare under the stars on a moonlit night on a secluded east-coast peninsula. That serendipitous conversation inspired a feature piece, marking the genesis of my unwavering admiration. Since then, I’ve been a devoted patron, frequenting Amari by Vineet (now simply named Amari) at LUX* Belle Mare, tracing the coastline from our inaugural encounter point, and indulging in the culinary delights at Rasoi by Vineet in Geneva on multiple occasions before its pandemic-induced closure.

Over the years, Amari has flourished under the adept stewardship of Chef de Cuisine Subi Mungroo and his proficient team, comprising talents like Tandoor Chef Sandeep Lodeechun, Sous Chef Ravi Dookhun, Chef de Partie (Curry section) Swaraj (Kunal) Ramgoolam, and Rajiv Gangaram.

Hands-on, always

Chef Vineet periodically returns to infuse the menu with fresh perspectives, turning visits into family holidays whenever possible. This time, he and Rashima, his wife and business partner, were there to supervise Amari’s renovation and oversee the finishing touches before the much-heralded reopening of LUX* Belle Mare on October 1, 2023. The resort has been so successful that the Forbes Travel Guide awarded it five stars for 2024.

Rashima recounted their odyssey in reimagining the culinary landscape, preserving Amari’s essence while subtly evolving its ambience over the past seven years. Reflecting on their enduring connection to Mauritius, she said that much like their evolving perception of this enchanting island, Amari encapsulates a journey of transformation and growth, resonating with their culinary ethos and life’s trajectory.

“In many ways, we approached the concept the way we felt about Mauritius [in the beginning] and how we feel at this point in our lives. We’ve been coming to the island as a family since 2001, but Vineet first touched these shores in 1992, so his recollection and memory of Mauritius as an island place is from that time. In 2001, we experienced a different Mauritius. And now, when we visit, it’s completely different again. So, how do we feel about that?

“And also from our stage of life, where we are now, and his [position] as a chef… he’s not stopped evolving but he’s stopped cooking to please. He’s no longer that student trying to get a foothold or that chef trying to sustain himself and please his partners or investors; it’s not the case anymore. Today, he’s very much about, ‘What do I want to do? What resonates with me? What am I happy eating? What am I happy cooking?’”

The revamped Amari menu is a testament to Chef Vineet’s maturation as a culinary maestro and his unwavering commitment to sustainability and holistic well-being. Embracing the intrinsic fusion of Indian and Mauritian cuisines, each dish reflects a harmonious interplay of flavours and textures, curated to satiate discerning palates.

Design Nuances

In contrast to traditional Indian eateries, Amari’s aesthetic diverges, courtesy of the visionary Jean-Marc Tang’s innovative design ethos, which evokes a tropical tapestry through a palette of coral, blush, and sand hues. His artistic vision transcends conventional paradigms, imbuing Amari with a serene, spa-like ambience that beckons guests on a sensory journey.

Rashima adds: “I think Jean-Marc has done a very good job because what we have right now is a very different take on Indian food ambience-wise. You have a very natural, holistic Indian appeal, down to the terracotta walls. Nothing else is there. Not one artefact, picture or wall hanging. When it was coming together from a design point of view, before the tables had gone in, I would have said it passed as a very good spa. It has this serenity and calmness to it, because of the very tasteful calamine, terracotta colour.”

And that lack of paintings or wall hangings makes the space so unique. The solution may have been wallpaper in other parts of the world, but Jean-Marc sourced local artisans to paint just one mural in a style deeply rooted in Indian culture, yet it was pretty uncommon. The main characteristic is its composition of dots and lines representing movement. “It’s a tribal art called Gond, named after one of the largest and oldest tribes in India. They occupied the central plateau, and they would draw these murals or paintings around their house. They were all about connecting with nature, so they drew the fish, birds, trees, and plants around them,” says Rashima. “And that is what we have here because we are surrounded by nature. The tree stands for spirituality, or connection to God, extending from earth to heaven as one of the tallest living things, so it’s all positive energy. So, for us, it was one more representation of the Indian aspect that perhaps is not very well known and people will ask about it.”

Mauritian Craftsmanship

A testament to their reverence for indigenous craftsmanship, Jean-Marc collaborated with local artisans to craft bespoke furnishings, echoing the organic allure of Mauritius’s landscape. Rashima’s design sensibilities seamlessly integrate with this narrative, accentuating the restaurant’s earthy charm with stoneware and tableware reminiscent of the island’s natural splendour.

Amidst these transformations, the restaurant’s entrance has undergone a subtle yet transformative shift. It ushers guests through a curved tunnel suffused with soft illumination, gradually revealing the culinary sanctum within. “You come out not quite at the centre. It slowly reveals itself. And that, I think, is the best part of the Amari renovation,” says Rashima.

The larger kitchen contains three tandoori ovens, visible through extensive windows that enable patrons to watch some of the food preparation and gesture to the staff, who appear unhurried, calm, and smiling – awaiting feedback on their delectable presentations.

I was one of the first journalists to dine there after the reopening, an experience I often revisit in my mind’s eye. I had a no-alcohol cocktail comprising cassis, raspberry, Darjeeling tea and sugar, followed by one of the starters Rashima had mentioned – the Lattice Samosa Chaat, a vegetarian dish involving a vegetable samosa, chickpeas, tamarind, and herb chutneys. I opted for the Lemongrass Chilli Coconut Prawns (coastal preparation of prawns in lemongrass, coconut, Kaffir lime and chilli flakes) as the main course, saving room for my new favourite dessert – Turmeric Tres Leches (cinnamon coconut-pineapple basundi, Mauritian vanilla-pineapple cream, almond bark). A light, not-too-sweet finish to the meal, Turmeric Tres Leches redefines the term “melt in the mouth” and left me wishing for seconds.

Thinking back, there’s one element available only at Amari that can’t be bought or trained: Mauritian staff who make you feel like one of the family. Mauritians are renowned for their hospitality, but I have yet to discover a team that delivers a more authentic, welcoming, familial service than this one. Seating is limited, so make it a point to book when you check in. It’s one of several special LUX* Belle Mare experiences you don’t want to miss.
