Hidden deep in the heart of Bali, and yet only a stone’s throw away from the bustling streets of Ubud, you’ll find a slice of heaven; welcome to the Viceroy Bali. This is where you go if you are searching for a more considered alternative to larger, busier properties, to experience Bali through a more intimate lens. You’ll be invited to slow down and reconnect with your surroundings, allowing you to leave the worries of the world behind as you learn the true meaning of relaxation.

Location

Overlooking the emerald valleys of Ubud, and reachable by a 90-minute car ride from Ngurah Rai International Airport, you’ll find your perfect base for a balance of exploration and rejuvenation. Whilst it may feel like the Viceroy Bali is worlds away from the bustle of Ubud town, you can still reach key attractions such as Ubud Palace, the Sacred Monkey Forest, and Tegalalang Rice Terraces within a 15-minute drive, making it fully accessible whilst maintaining the aura of seclusion.

My Room

I stayed in the Deluxe Terrace Villa, and from the moment I stepped inside, I felt instantly at ease. Modern luxury is softened here by traditional Balinese craftsmanship and integration of natural materials. Imagine rich woods, hand-carved furnishings, and subtle Balinese touches woven together with soft white linens and luxury amenities, giving the space a quietly elegant charm.

The highlight? a deep soaking tub perfectly positioned to view the natural surroundings, against a backdrop of shimmering mosaic tiles that catch the light. The oversized rain shower and his-and-hers vanities reintroduce sleek, modern design, providing a sanctuary to unwind after a day spent exploring Ubud’s waterfalls.

With only 40 villas across the entire resort the Viceroy Bali maintains an intimate, boutique feel despite its iconic name. The philosophy here is simple; space, privacy, and connection to nature. Each villa is cleverly positioned to open outward rather than inward, naturally drawing your eye to the lush valleys that frame the heated infinity pool on your private terrace. This is where the Viceroy Bali truly stands apart. Every villa comes with its own private heated pool, with the temperature customised to your preference, inviting you for a dip at any time of day. It’s a small detail, but one of accessibility that makes a noticeable difference to the overall experience.

Culinary Journeys

My mornings began at CasCades Restaurant, where I enjoyed breakfast whilst getting lost in the emerald haze of the valleys of Ubud. Refreshingly, breakfast is entirely à la carte, with everything prepared fresh, from classic egg dishes with a twist to local Balinese dishes. My morning selection was simple yet indulgent; starting with a selection of fresh exotic fruits paired with a warm pastry, followed by their signature version of a classic eggs benedict, all whilst sipping a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. With coffee being an essential part of local culture, the Viceroy Bali ensures it sources only the finest Indonesian coffee beans. I was impressed by the Indonesian blend served with its earthy, full-bodied and deeply aromatic notes, that provided the perfect pick-me-up I needed for a day of chasing waterfalls.

If breakfast isn’t part of your routine, the CasCades Restaurant transitions into providing a relaxed and unfussy lunch, which you can enjoy by the infinity pool. However, the real magic begins as the sun sets and the atmosphere subtly starts to shift. Soft lighting, warm tones, and the surrounding jungle as a backdrop creates a more intimate mood for dinner. The menu is generous, leaving you spoilt for choice, but the highlight was the catch of the day, prepared Balinese style. With ingredients sourced from the resort’s own greenhouse, it was a fresh and flavourful introduction to Indonesian cuisine, and a dish I’d recommend trying without hesitation. The alternative dining option to CasCades Restaurant is the Apéritif Restaurant & Bar. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to experience the restaurant, but if you’re looking for a truly memorable evening, it offers an intimate fine-dining experience with its award-winning tasting menu in the 1920s inspired space.

To round off the night, I couldn’t resist a nightcap at the Pinstripe Bar. The mood was set the moment I stepped inside with the low lighting, jazz drifting softly through the space, and a creative cocktail list sure to tickle your tastebuds. I stayed true to my usual choice and ordered a negroni which was executed to perfection. It’s an easy place to lose track of time, and the perfect full stop to an evening at the Viceroy Bali.

Moments in Between

If you’re looking to pause and reset after exploring all the natural wonders that Ubud has to offer, there is plenty to keep you occupied at the Viceroy Bali. My days fell into a simple rhythm that I would encourage: a morning spent lounging by the main infinity pool overlooking the jungle, an afternoon tucked away in one of the resort’s quiet nooks with a book in hand, and the perfect close to the day with a deeply restorative Balinese massage at the Akoya Spa.

There are also plenty of activities offered at the resort, including yoga classes, cooking classes, and guided walks through the surrounding valleys, to name a few. For something a bit more strenuous the gym is well equipped and includes a squash court and a boxing bag, which is beyond what most hotel gyms offer. Rest assured, you can fill your day as much or as little as you want here, completely tailored to your preference.

Final thoughts

What makes the Viceroy Bali stand out isn’t a single, defined feature, but the way everything comes together in perfect balance. Nothing feels like it’s trying too hard, and this quiet confidence is exactly what allows me, as a guest, to settle fully into the experience. My days naturally unfolded at an unforced pace, which provided a feeling of ease and balance that lingered long after I departed.

The Viceroy Bali isn’t about ticking boxes or chasing trends; it’s about creating spaces for moments that feel genuinely restorative, and in that, it succeeds beautifully.

If you’re looking for a haven of understated luxury in Bali, where traditional Balinese design, spacious accommodations, and discreet, attentive service combine to create a genuinely restorative experience, The Oberoi Beach Resort Bali is for you. From tranquil garden paths and open-air pavilions to thoughtfully curated dining and wellness offerings, the resort provides a refined, serene retreat for travellers seeking elegance, comfort, and a slower pace on Bali’s vibrant Seminyak coast.

Location

The Oberoi Beach Resort Bali enjoys a privileged beachfront location, with the gentle rhythm of the ocean forming a tranquil backdrop to 16 acres of meticulously landscaped tropical gardens.

Despite this sense of seclusion, the bustling streets of Seminyak, renowned for lively restaurants, bars, and boutique shopping, are just a short stroll away. Within 30 minutes, you’re transported from the airport to your haven, and if you’re looking to venture to nearby cultural and historic landmarks, including Pura Petitenget Temple, or explore the artsy enclave of Canggu, you can do so all without straying far from the calm oasis of the resort.

It is this rare balance of accessibility and serenity that allows the resort to feel both intimate and perfectly placed, offering the best of Bali at your doorstep.

Rooms and Suites

Accommodation at The Oberoi Beach Resort Bali is defined by spaciousness, thoughtful design, and a quiet sense of retreat. The resort offers garden-lanai villas, pool villas, and beachfront suites, each blending traditional Balinese architecture with modern touches. Teak furnishings, natural materials, and soft fabrics create interiors that feel warm, inviting, and intimately connected to the surrounding tropical gardens.

Many villas and suites feature private pools or direct garden access, allowing you to enjoy outdoor living in privacy. Floor-to-ceiling windows and open-air pavilions ensure an abundance of natural light, while bathrooms, cladded with sunken marble tubs, separate rain showers, and generous vanities, feel like private sanctuaries.

What distinguishes the resort is the consistency of experience: whether in a garden-view lanai, a private pool villa, or a beachfront suite, every room is carefully curated to encourage relaxation, reflection, and a sense of escape.

Culinary Journeys

Mornings begin at the outdoor beachfront café, where breakfast is a leisurely affair. Freshly baked pastries, tropical fruits, and made-to-order eggs are served alongside traditional Indonesian favourites, all presented with care and attention. The gentle sound of waves lapping the shore and the soft morning light filtering through the palms set a serene tone, inviting you to linger and start the day unhurriedly.

Lunch can be savoured poolside or in one of the resort’s open-air pavilions, where light, vibrant dishes make the most of local ingredients. From fresh seafood to creative salads, each plate balances flavour and freshness, perfectly complementing the relaxed pace of a day spent wandering the gardens or soaking in the sun.

Once the sun dips for the day, be ready to be transported to a more intimate setting, with candlelit terraces and thatched-roof pavilions framing your dinner, and a menu that blends global techniques with Indonesian flair. Signature dishes include delicately spiced seafood, tender grilled meats, and inventive vegetarian creations, all prepared with precision and subtlety. Service is attentive without intrusion, allowing you to focus on the food, the setting, and the gentle rhythm of the resort.

Other Facilities

There are a range of facilities on offer at the resort, designed to enhance relaxation and well-being. The outdoor swimming pool is set amid lush gardens, with shaded loungers and private cabanas providing the perfect spot to unwind. The spa occupies a serene pavilion by a lily-filled courtyard, offering treatments inspired by traditional Balinese rituals alongside modern wellness therapies.

If you’re seeking something a little more active, the small fitness centre is well-equipped and complemented by yoga sessions in tranquil garden spaces. The resort also provides personalised services, from curated excursions and cultural experiences to private beach dinners, ensuring each stay is tailored to your pace and preferences.

Final thoughts

The Oberoi Beach Resort Bali is a study in quiet sophistication. Every element, from the villas and garden paths to the open-air pavilions and attentive service, has been designed to encourage a slower, more restorative rhythm. It is a place where space, light, and thoughtful detail converge, allowing you to reconnect with yourself and the natural beauty of Bali. Whether enjoying a sunrise breakfast by the beach, a private dip in your pool, or a candlelit dinner under the palms, the resort offers a sense of calm that lingers long after departure.

TLE Top Tip

  1. Book a beachfront or pool villa: For maximum privacy and a true sense of escape, choose a villa with direct beach access or a private pool.
  2. Explore locally: While the resort feels like a world apart, Seminyak’s shops, restaurants, and cultural sites are easily accessible and worth venturing out to.

Bali, an island where every traveller finds their paradise, is not just a destination—it’s an experience cloaked in the completely unique culture of Balinese Hinduism. From the world-class waves of Uluwatu and the ancient temples and waterfalls of Ubud to the pristine beaches that line its shores, Bali captivates with its diversity. Beyond its beaches, the island – like all of Indonesia – boasts stunning coral reefs, especially in less-trodden locales like Lembongan Island, Amed, or Northwest Bali. Of course, it’s perhaps most known as a haven for wellness enthusiasts, offering yoga and meditation retreats that tap into the island’s spiritual roots. But what makes Bali unlike any other tropical getaway, is how it can blend experiences of remote serenity with culinary options on par with any global city.

DO

Snorkeling Around Bali

Embark on a snorkelling adventure in Bali, where the marine life is as vibrant as the culture above water. The crystal-clear waters of Lembongan Island are perfect for swimming alongside majestic manta rays at Manta Point, or drifting with the gentle current over its beautiful reefs. In Amed, discover the underwater wonders at the Japanese wreck, a hotspot for snorkelers thanks to the wreck’s shallow perch. For those seeking more solitude, the remote reefs of Northwest Bali near Menjangan Island offer a peaceful escape into an aquatic paradise. These locations boast some of the island’s most protected corals teeming with an array of tropical fish, sharks, turtles and more.

Exploring Ancient Temples

Bali’s ancient temples offer a profound glimpse into the island’s spiritual heritage. Lempuyang Temple, known as “Heaven’s Gate,” sits majestically at a high elevation, framing Mount Agung through its iconic gateway (on a cloudless, dry-season day of course). The journey to Lempuyang can be strenuous but provides a scenic trek past other sacred sites. Alternatively, the serene Ulun Danu Beratan Temple in Bali’s mountainous, central region appears to float on Lake Bratan when the waters rise. This 17th-century marvel is surrounded by mountains and often shrouded in mist, creating a surreal atmosphere ideal for photography. Both temples not only offer a chance for spiritual connection but also stunning landscapes that embody the tranquillity and beauty of Balinese culture.

Visit Bali’s Most Under-The-Radar Beach

Virgin Beach in Karangasem, also known as White Sand Beach, is a pristine retreat away from Bali’s more crowded, and sometimes trash-strewn spots. Located on the eastern coast, this beach is accessible from nearby tourist hubs like Candidasa and Amed. With its sparkling turquoise waters and stretches of soft white sand, Virgin Beach offers a tranquil setting ideal for sunbathing and splashing in the waves. The traditional jukung canoes lining the shore add a picturesque touch to the scenic views, making it a perfect destination for those looking to experience the quieter side of Bali’s spectacular coastline.

Indonesia, with its stunning archipelago of over 17,000 islands, boasts a wealth of natural wonders and cultural diversity just waiting to be explored. For those seeking an unparalleled travel experience, chartering a private yacht, and embarking on a luxury sailing holiday offers an extraordinary way to explore the beauty and richness of this Southeast Asian gem. Join Barefoot Yachts as they take you on a unique and enchanting seafaring adventure.

The Indonesian Phinisi yachts hold a rich history deeply rooted in the maritime traditions and cultural heritage of Indonesia. These traditional wooden sailing vessels have played a crucial role in the history of seafaring and were an enabler of human ventures in a country with more than 17,000 islands. The term “Phinisi” is believed to have originated from the Bugis people of South Sulawesi, who are renowned for their boat-building skills.

The traditional vessels are characterized by their unique design, featuring a massive wooden hull, two masts, and distinctive sails. The construction process is a meticulous art, often passed down through generations within communities.

Originally designed for trade, Phinisis were versatile vessels that could navigate both open seas and shallow waters, making them perfect for the Indonesian archipelago. Over time, they have undergone adaptations to meet modern needs and enter new waters. Transformed or newly built, modern Phinisi-style yachts showcase a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

As floating boutique holiday homes with exquisite interior designs, they cater to those who seek an authentic, yet luxurious way to explore the pristine waters of the Indonesian archipelago.
Ranging from luxury liveaboards to award-winning super yachts, Barefoot Yachts Indonesia offers the finest selection of Phinisi-style yachts.

With her elegant, state-of-the-art contemporary and time-honoured design, Fenides combines German perfectionism and skilled craftsmanship. Constructed from tropical Ironwood and native Teak wood, she redefines the standards of luxury liveaboards. Accents of modern art, bright colors and natural wood, create a light and welcoming feeling. The large indoor spaces and wide-open decks are perfectly arranged, and impressive wooden beams on the cabins ceilings remind you this is actually a yacht.

Lamima is the epitome of luxury and elegance. Claiming the title of Asia’s largest wooden sailing yacht, she is an outstanding example of ancient tradition and modern luxury. Designed in 2012 by esteemed yacht designer Marcelo Penna of Barcelona and built by the skilful boat builders of Ara in Sulawesi, the vessel fuses the authenticity of a traditional Phinisi with the latest concepts in modern design and technology. Lamima’s open-plan and contemporary interior is both light and airy. The spacious guest areas and cabins draw on cultural influences and are draped in furniture and luxury fittings that reflect her origin in the most beautiful way.

Celestia Yacht represents another perfect fusion of modern elegance and traditional Indonesian craftsmanship. Onboard, nothing has been left to chance with interiors designed by Cape Town-based design studio Deirdre Renniers. All spaces have been meticulously planned to seamlessly blend with the colours of the surrounding landscape, including custom furnishings in subtle hues of blue and cream. Each of the 7 suites features teak and rattan-paneled furnishings finished with brass hardware and luxurious textiles. The luxury continues into the ensuite bathrooms, boasting hand-glazed locally-made tiles, white Carrara marble counters and Villeroy & Boch finishing.

Discovering Indonesia, especially aboard a modern Phinisi yacht, embodies a philosophy that cherishes quality over quantity, depth over superficiality, and presence over distraction. It promises authenticity, comfort, and luxury. Start planning your exceptional voyage with Barefoot Yachts Indonesia.
