Horizn Studios is an innovative luxury luggage and accessories brand that combines performance with sustainability. Since its 2015 launch in Berlin, it has blended intelligent design—think removable chargers and recycled materials—with high-end aesthetics and does so whilst embracing ethical business practices.  Their proprietary Circle One luggage marks a new era in eco‑luxury, while their limited editions bring creativity, cultural depth and a sense of fun. Combine these factors with robust guarantees and circular production models and the result is a smart brand that successfully delivers quality with luxury conscience in the luxury travel market.

Origins & Founding

Horizn Studios was established in Berlin in 2015 by Stefan Holwe and Jan Roosen, their ambition was to present the luxury luggage market with an innovative and sustainable offering. From the very beginning, the brand positioned itself as design- and innovation-driven, targeting next‑generation travellers with smart, high‑end and accessories that are of exceptional quality.

Core Values & Brand Ethos

At its heart, Horizn Studios operates on the principle “Let’s Go. Further.”—a commitment to challenge conventions and push boundaries through curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Sustainability is an integral part of all they do and they operate a circular economy model: products are engineered to last a lifetime, are repairable, and are designed to be as eco‑friendly as possible. It’s not only the product range that emphasises sustainability – business operations and company culture embrace a socially responsible ethos too.

Highlights of their sustainability efforts include:

  • Animal‑friendly production: Horizn is the first luggage brand to earn the PETA‑Approved Vegan label, and in 2020, won their Vegan Travel Award for Best Luggage.
  • Materials & production: Lining and zippers are fully recycled. Selected ranges, such as Chiado and Shibuya, use exclusively reused fabrics. Production generates minimal waste, with offcuts recycled or repurposed.
  • Packaging: No single‑use plastics. Luggage is shipped in reusable cotton dust bags (I must say I love the dust bag almost as much as I love the suitcase itself!!), backpacks and accessories use compostable PLA bags. Outer packaging comprises recycled cardboard.
  • Carbon‑neutral logistics: The brand offsets CO₂ through verified climate‑positive projects. Their offices and stores run on green energy, and staff are incentivised to use public transport or bicycles.
  • Social initiatives: The “Horizn Together” programme, launched in 2020 with Kiron, offers displaced and marginalised youth free access to education. They also back emerging visual and musical talent through their “Horizn Art Programme”

Product Ranges & Key Features

Horizn Studios offers a comprehensive range of travel products that includes:

  • Luggage:
    • Smart Series: Since 2016, luggage featuring a removable power charger—a first in the market.
    • RE Series: Made from 97 per cent recycled polycarbonate—post‑consumer waste like CDs—and featuring fully recycled interiors; comes with a lifetime warranty and TSA‑approved locks.
    • Circle One: A revolutionary, fully plant‑based and biodegradable hard shell made from flax‑fibre weave (BioX). Lighter than aluminium, more durable than regular polycarbonate. Every part is repairable—never replaceable.
  • Backpacks, Bags & Accessories:
    • Daily‑use, travel, roll‑top, laptop and commuter backpacks.
    • Spotlight items—e.g. the Gion Backpack Travel (water‑resistant tarpaulin with smart compartments) and SoFo variations (so versatile they function like a suitcase but wear as a backpack).
    • Weekenders, business, crossbody and tote bags, plus accessories such as packing cubes, cardholders, wallets, suitcase protection sleeves, laptop cases and wash bags.

Quality Assurance

Horizn stands behind its craftsmanship. Since 1 February 2023, all luggage benefits from a Lifetime Manufacturer’s Guarantee. Soft goods (bags, backpacks, accessories) come with a two‑year guarantee when registered online, or one year unregistered.

Innovation & Limited Editions

Beyond the classic collections, Horizn excels at combining culture and creativity through its limited‑edition offerings. Collaborations with forward‑thinking, aligned brands and creators include BMW, Beats by Dre, Soho House, DJ Seth Troxler (Pro Model ST DJ), NASA astronaut Alyssa Carson (space luggage), and artist Emeka Ogboh (Lagos‑inspired edition).

Each limited edition brings a unique element that is representative of the collaboration, be it a design function, cultural resonance or a particular finish.

And it’s not just external partnerships that foster originality, Horizn nurtures creativity internally through a lean, fast‑moving culture where every team member is empowered to propose ideas. They validate innovation via Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), taking swift to market feedback to guide product.

Hermitage Cognac, a Statement of Sophistication and Legacy

Hermitage Cognac was founded in 1990 by David Baker, a cognac specialist known for sourcing vintage and age-statement cognacs. The company is based in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, and focuses exclusively on rare cognacs from the Grande Champagne region, the Premier Cru of Cognac.

Recognised for its emphasis on heritage and transparency, each release by Hermitage Cognac is clearly labelled with an age or vintage statement and accompanied by provenance documentation. This approach distinguishes Hermitage Cognac in an industry where blended cognacs without declared ages are more common.

The range includes cognacs aged for several decades, with some dating back to the 19th century. One of the most notable bottlings is the Hermitage Siècle d’Or 100-Year-Old Cognac, presented in a Cumbria crystal decanter. Other releases include the Paradis Collection, which features vintages from the late 1800s, and a series of cognacs aged from 20 to 70 years.

Hermitage Cognac has received recognition at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), earning medals for several expressions including a Gold medal for the Hermitage 1995 Grande Champagne Cognac in this year’s IWSC awards.

Living the April Hamilton Way: A Guide to Effortless Elegance and Heartfelt Luxury

Welcome. We’re Rosie and Charlotte, and we’re so glad you’re here with The Luxury Editor. At April Hamilton, our design philosophy has always been rooted in more than just aesthetics, it’s about how a space makes you feel. Creating homes that feel deeply personal, beautifully balanced and entirely yours is what drives everything we do. And we’re honoured to share a little of our world with you, the readers of The Luxury Editor.

About Us: A Sisterhood of Creativity

We’re two passionate designers with a shared vision, each bringing our own sensibilities and experiences to the design table. Charlotte’s love for timeless design and project management pairs beautifully with Rosie’s vibrant, contemporary perspective. Together, we create interiors that tell stories about the people who live there, their passions, their travels and the life they dream of living.

For us, design is never just about ‘the look’ it’s about the quiet luxury of coming home to a space that feels like an embrace. It’s about finding beauty in the everyday and crafting spaces that nurture and inspire.

What We Offer

Every home has a soul and our role is to listen, interpret and bring it gently to life. Our design services are designed to meet our clients where they are in their journey, whether they’re undertaking a full renovation or simply want to add some thoughtful touches to their interiors.

Here’s how we support:

  • Interior Architecture & Design – From the bones of the building to the very last cushion, we’re there.
  • Bespoke Furniture & Joinery – Tailor-made pieces crafted with heart and purpose.
  • Spatial Planning & Lighting – Because how you move through your home and the way it feels at every time of day, matters deeply.
  • Project Coordination – So you can sit back and enjoy the journey without the stress.

Every project is a collaboration and our greatest joy is helping you fall in love with your home all over again.

Our Process: A Gentle, Thoughtful Journey

Designing a home is personal and we honour that at every step. Our process is intentionally nurturing and transparent, beginning with heartfelt conversations and flowing seamlessly into design presentations, sourcing and project management.

We take time to understand your life, your routines and the little things that bring you joy. With every sample and decision, we’re guided by what will bring harmony, beauty and ease into your life. After 30 years of experience, it’s a journey we’re experts in!

Bringing the Hotel-At-Home Feeling: Our Favourite Touches

One of the questions we’re often asked is, “How can I make my home feel as luxurious and inviting as a beautiful boutique hotel?” The answer lies in layering in details that feel intentional, indulgent and personal. Here are a few of our favourite ways to elevate your home:

1. Choose Quality You Can Feel: From buttery-soft fabrics to natural stone and warm finishes, materials matter. They bring soul and texture to your space. In our guide to choosing luxury materials, we talk about the joy of engaging your senses with every element. Visit our website for our useful guides.

2. Commission Bespoke Joinery: Custom pieces fit your home like a glove and reflect your style, down to the smallest detail. It’s a deeply personal way to elevate function and beauty in equal measure. Joinery is also a worthwhile investment to the value of your property.

3. Create Balance and Flow: How you feel moving from one room to another matters. We think about the rhythm of a space… the pause when you enter, the focal point that draws you in and the quiet corners that invite you to linger.

4. Light for Every Mood: We adore working with layered lighting: ambient glow, task-specific spots and a few beautiful statement pieces. The right light can shift the whole mood of a space from bright and energising to soft and serene. With the help of integrated home technologies at our finger tips, the options are superb!

5. Don’t Forget the Little Luxuries: A vase of fresh flowers, a handwoven throw or a curated collection of books, they all add layers of lived-in love. These finishing touches make a space not just stylish, but soulful and they play a huge part of finishing off the space.

6. A Living Room That Truly Lives: This is often where life happens, conversations, celebrations, quiet evenings. Whether you favour clean lines or sumptuous textures, our design ideas always start with your lifestyle in mind. They also say the kitchen is the heart of the home and a lot of projects start with the principle rooms first.

How to Choose the Right Interior Designer (From Our Hearts to Yours)

We know how personal it is to invite a designer into your home and your world. That’s why we always encourage people to choose someone they feel truly connected to. Here’s our honest advice:

1. Know What You Need: Are you seeking guidance, transformation or simply a little polish? Whether you need full project support or just some thoughtful tweaks, make sure your designer’s offering fits your needs. It’s super helpful to have a brief / scope of works in mind, it’s super helpful for the designer to understand from the get go how they can help you.

2. Avoid the Common Traps: It’s easy to be dazzled by style, but substance matters more. We’ve written about common pitfalls like overlooking lighting or overfilling a space. Good design should enhance your life, not just impress your guests.

3. Choose a Good Listener: Your voice matters. The best designers aren’t just visionaries, they’re collaborators. We believe in creating spaces with you, not just for you.

4. Celebrate Your Uniqueness: No one else lives exactly as you do and that’s something to be celebrated. We tailor every element of our work to honour that individuality.

5. Understand Their Process: Clarity brings peace of mind. Look for a designer who shares their process openly and invites you in every step of the way. Our own process is built on openness, trust and genuine care. We’re communicative and transparent.

A Loving Final Thought

Luxury isn’t about extravagance. It’s about care, intention and the quiet joy of being surrounded by things that make your everyday feel a little more beautiful.

Thank you for spending this time with us. Whether you’re dreaming up your next project or simply looking for inspiration, we hope you leave feeling encouraged and excited to make your home truly your own.

With love,

Rosie & Charlotte

For almost one hundred years, generations of the Gordon family have carefully laid down stocks of whisky for special occasions and personal consumption. This rare collection has become known as House of Hazelwood, after the family’s Dufftown home – Hazelwood House.

Today, the House of Hazelwood collection has grown to become the greatest inventory of aged Scotch whisky held anywhere in the world. Spanning seven decades and every corner of Scotland, the diverse whiskies held in cask tell stories of remarkable places, lost ways of working, first casks, last casks, the ambitions and achievements of several lifetimes – none of which will be repeated.

The House of Hazelwood inventory is held in several carefully selected warehouses across Scotland, with fresh stocks laid down each year. Prior to bottling, a small proportion of the stocks are held in traditional dunnage warehousing near Dufftown in Speyside, from where they are carefully monitored and sampled ahead of release.

Talking about the collection, Kirsten Grant-Meikle, fifth generation descendant said: “For almost one hundred years my family has been laying down stocks of whisky to mature for future generations to enjoy, with the collection growing in scope and stature as the decades have passed. For the first time, this once-private collection is being offered to those outside the immediate family in small batches hand-selected for release. These are the most compelling whiskies that the inventory has to offer – a bridge between the past and the present, each issue remarkable by virtue of its character, history or method of production.”

Connoisseurs and Collectors

The whiskies are aimed at whisky connoisseurs and collectors who love rare and aged whiskies. The collections offer a range of whiskies that will surprise and delight you and challenge what you think of blends, blended malts and grains.

Each whisky is an individual and has its own story to tell. We find that some of our customers choose to buy our whisky due to its unique flavour and style, while others buy the complete collection.

Our Portfolio

Our whiskies range in price from £900 up to £6,000 being the most expensive in our collection to date.

We believe that luxury blends of such rare quality and nature merit the price tag – these are never to be repeated bottlings – once they are gone, they are gone. There are many single malts that are not anything like the age and rarity of these whiskies that are sold at much higher price points. We have been told our whiskies are extremely well priced given the rarity and quality of the whisky.

Unlike most Scotch whisky producers, our business carries with it no requirement to release whiskies of a given age or style on a set date. It is a collection of individual spirits, representing unique casks, trials that have taken place over the years and combinations that may never be seen again. Central to this is the philosophy that the maturing stock is ready when it’s ready. The inventory is regularly sampled, with meticulous records kept of its progress. Only once it reaches its peak will it be bottled – and of course, in a world of individuals, once it’s gone it is truly gone. The whiskies carried within the collections are unique and irreplaceable– single snapshots in the long history of Scotch whisky.

The collections are worked on by a team of people including the family, directors of the business and the blending team. At the outset, we don’t set out with a theme in mind and always start with the liquid and endeavour to keep an open mind. Our goal is to uncover the hidden gems, the unusual flavours and parcels of whiskies that we think are exceptional within the family’s collection. Variety is also an essential element. We don’t stipulate that we need to create a set number of blends, blended malts or grains. Depending on what we uncover that then inspires the names and theme for the whiskies.

To date (July 2024) House of Hazelwood has released three Collections of eight whiskies in each. The diverse whiskies all feature unique provenance and are highly limited – from the first drop of whisky to come off the stills at the Girvan grain distillery on the South Ayrshire coast – to the last drops distilled at some of Scotland’s now silent distilleries. Each collection is split across a range of four Charles Gordon Collection releases (with recommended retail pricing from £3,000 to £6000 / 70cl) and four Legacy Collection releases (with recommended pricing from £950 to £1,900).

The Collections

The House of Hazelwood Launch Collection (First Collection):

The Charles Gordon Collection

A legend within the Scotch whisky community, Charles Gordon spent much of his youth at Hazelwood House and in later years was fundamental in bringing in some of the earliest stock that was laid down for the House of Hazelwood collection This eponymous collection of rare and old Scotch whiskies represents some of the most remarkable stock held within the inventory – every cask aged for at least fifty years, every bottle with its own story to tell.

  • The Cask Trials, 53 Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky. Distilled in 1968 and matured for 53 years in a single sherry butt, this is an incredibly rare, deep and intense release crafted from an unlikely marriage of European oak and Girvan grain. Almost unrecognisable as grain whisky but with a delicious underlying richness.
  • The First Drop, 58 Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky. On 8th January 1964, the very first drops of new make spirit flowed at the Girvan grain distillery, in South Ayrshire. Since then, many millions of litres of alcohol have flowed off those stills, but the first casks filled have lain undisturbed – maturing and improving with every day.
  • Blended at Birth, 56 Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky. Some whiskies may appear born to be paired together but very few are blended at birth. Yet such is the case with this unusual parcel of grain and malt, born 56 years ago and married – as new make spirit – before aging as a blend for half a lifetime in American Oak. Time has mellowed the new-make character and brought the malt and grain components together to create a blend that has matured as a single spirit.
  • The Long Marriage, 56 Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky. This unique whisky has lain undisturbed in a single refill butt marrying for almost half a century. Bottled at natural strength this is one of the rarest whiskies within our inventory – rich and mature with a majestic antique character and layers of complexity.

The Legacy Collection

Every whisky laid down within the House of Hazelwood inventory represents a legacy for future generations to explore and enjoy. The Legacy Collection showcases some of the brightest highlights of the inventory, comprising whiskies of exceptional character and provenance, each with a story to tell.  Within the Collection are whiskies that are the first of their kind, the last of their line, those that capture the spirit of an era and those that offer insights into the inner workings of the Scotch whisky community.

  • The Tops, 33 Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky. Every blender has malt whiskies in their inventory that are considered to be ‘tops’ – the best of the best available from the inventory, typically used sparingly and eked out over time. This rare blend of malts is an indulgent combination of the very best of our ‘tops’, married together to create something truly precious – richly decadent with a sherried character and layers of complexity.
  • The Spirit of Scotland, 46 Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky. This exceptional blend was first created in 1994 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the oldest recorded reference to Scotch Whisky within the1494 Exchequer Rolls of Scotland. Since first being blended, the spirit has lain in cask for a further 28 years, developing further with every year and building into a truly exceptional, fully-unified Blended Scotch Whisky.
  • Sunshine on Speyside, 39 Year-Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Distilled in the early ‘80s in the era of brightly coloured, tropical flavoured cocktails it is perhaps only natural that this Speyside Blended Malt has taken on notes of pineapple and mango throughout its time in cask. The emergence of flavours such as this is unusual, inexplicable and reminds us of the magical process that takes place between cask and spirit over time.
  • The Lost Estate, 43 Year-Old Blended Grain Scotch Whisky. Grain whisky distilleries in Scotland are rare enough but a blend of grain whiskies created from now-silent distilleries is rarer still. This unique blend brings together the individual distillery characters of two of Scotland’s closed grain whisky distilleries to create a style of whisky that reflects a past era of production.

The Autumn Collection (Second collection)

The Charles Gordon Collection

  • A Singular Blend, 1963 Blended Scotch Whisky, 74 bottles worldwide, RRSP£4,900

Unprecedented at this age, the most singular of blends is composed not only of whiskies from the same region but scotch whiskies from the very same Highland distillery – with both grain and malt components stemming from the same year of production at the same site. Matured for 58 years in American Oak, the blend has over time, taken on rich layers of complexity that complement and enhance both aspects of the distillery character.

  • The Old Confectioner’s, 44 Year-Old Blended Malt, 256 bottles worldwide, RRSP£3,000

Certain whiskies have the ability to transport the drinker back to lost places that cannot be revisited any other way. Such is the case with this remarkable aged malt, rich with the treacle toffee, liquorice and candied fruit notes found in old sweet shops. Warming, enormously satisfying and lightly drying on the finish, years of marrying in refill sherry butts have created a fully unified wonderfully evocative malt whisky.

  • The Next Chapter, 50 Year-Old Blended Scotch, 157 bottles worldwide, RRSP £4,000

Distilled in 1972 and initially aged to near perfection in a combination of European and American Oak this blend embarked upon a brave new chapter through a ten-year secondary finishing period in active ex-bourbon barrels. Such a process is unusual but has added fresh vigour to the already weighty blend – a testament to the power of new beginnings and a reminder that it is never too late to embark on the next chapter.

  • The Unknown, 44 Year-Old Blended Scotch, 143 bottles worldwide, RRSP£3,000

Some blends are so compelling that a little mystery only adds to their allure – and such is the case with this gloriously mature scotch whisky. While the precise provenance of its component parts were lost, we can say that the elements were distilled in 1978 and blended in 1989. An exclusive secondary maturation for a further 33 years in a single refill butt has created a blend of exceptional quality.

The Legacy Collection

  • A Breath of Fresh Air, 37 Year-Old Blended Grain, 417 bottles worldwide, RRSP£1,450

This exceptional blend of aged grain whiskies from across Scotland possesses a character that is stunningly clean, fresh almost minty on the palate. A showcase for the diverse, beguiling identities that old grain whisky can take on, its invigorating, reviving and entirely unique character offers something new for even the most experienced of palates.

  • A Trail of Smoke, 42 Year-Old Blended Malt, 385 bottles worldwide, RRSP£1,900

This beautifully balanced malt whisky takes us on a meandering journey through Scotland’s Islands – from dry and herbal to luscious and fruity with a delicate trail of woodsmoke always present in the background. An astonishingly complex, wonderfully evocative release redolent of the remarkable islands from which it hails.

  • The Eight Grain, 40 Year-Old Blended Grain, 384 bottles worldwide, RRSP£1,200

Celebrating all that aged grain whiskies can bring this highly unusual release brings together the distillery character of eight of Scotland’s closed and active grain whisky distilleries. Combining the rich and unctuous decadence and bright citrus notes characteristic of the component distilleries, this release is rare, unrepeatable, and utterly delicious.

  • The Lowlander, 36 Year-Old Blended Scotch, 432 bottles worldwide, RRSP£950

Bringing together the strengths of a number of Scotland’s Lowland distilleries this unusual release celebrates what is often an overlooked region within the world of Scotch whisky. Bright and crisp in character with notes of granite and spun sugar this is a showcase for the merits of Lowland distillation and maturation.

Renowned whisky expert Charles Maclean, on sampling the second collection, said:

‘These are tremendous whiskies – greatly aged, complex, outstanding on the palate. However, what really sets them apart are the stories behind them. Every bottle is an invitation into the Gordon family’s ways of working – a very personal connection to a different era, a different mindset. We should be in no doubt that these whiskies are heirlooms and none more so than the 1963 release A Singular Blend. To see a whisky of such provenance available to purchase is a remarkable thing – and for those lucky enough to try it, the liquid character is breath-taking.’

The 2024 Collection (Third collection)

The Charles Gordon Collection

  • The Garden at Hazelwood, 47-Year-Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, 45.8% ABV, 137 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £4,500

Reminiscent of the garden at Hazelwood House, this release is redolent of the natural haven that has played host to generations of the Gordon family. Wonderfully welcoming with an abundance of lavender and orchard fruits.

  • The Last Trace, 58-Year-Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, 43.1% ABV, 65 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £6,000

The final swan song of two casks ravaged by theft committed by the Angel’s Share. The resulting whisky offers a remarkable depth, balancing the sweet and savoury masterfully.

  • A Minute to Midnight, 45-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky, 58.6% ABV, 154 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £4,000

Unashamed decadence in its depth, this outstanding sherry bomb is one to keep under lock and key until the house falls quiet in the latest hours of the night. Only then is it safe to savour, as an indulgence such as this always disappears all too soon.

  • The Old Ways, 1972 Vintage Single Grain Scotch Whisky, 50.1% ABV, 123 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £3,500

A true champion of a time gone past, this sensational single grain embodies the booming entrepreneurial spirit and ambition of the Scotch whisky industry in the 1970s. A hero grain of remarkable character.

The Legacy Collection

  • The Hazelwood Highlander, 33-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky, 45.8% ABV, 203 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £1,200

One intake of breath after uncorking this Blended Scotch Whisky and you could find yourself transported to the rich, luscious rolling hills of the Scottish countryside in summer. Meet the spiritual sibling of The Lowlander.

  • Queen of the Hebrides, 36-Year-Old Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, 43.4% ABV, 274 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £2,000

Heave away on the gulf of the Corryvreckan and discover a marvellous maelstrom character within this smoked sensation. A heavily peated partner worthy of such a royal title.

  • The Silk Traveller, 44-Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky, 47.6% ABV, 212 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £1,500

An unexpected immersion of the senses – and extremely pleasurable in every nuanced note. Generous, warm and sweetly spiced – a journey down this road of silk will yield boons in flavour.

  • The Transatlantic, 33-Year-Old Blended Grain Scotch Whisky, 57.3% ABV, 291 bottles worldwide, UK RRSP £1,300

A rare, delicious Scotch Blended Grain that could easily be twinned if sampled blind, with the finest of American Bourbon. Sweet and woody, this drop will reward on every aspect of taste.

In addition to the above 24 bottles – we also have two special bottles released in 2023. The Accelerator & The Brake was launched in partnership with world renowned whisky expert, Dave Broom.  The Huntsman Blend was created in partnership with Huntsman Tailors of Savile Row, who were celebrating their 75th anniversary and kicked it off by creating a bespoke House of Hazelwood tweed cloth and a Huntsman Blended Whisky.

  • The Huntsman Blend, 50-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky, 75 bottles worldwide, RRSP £5,900
  • The Accelerator & The Brake, 33-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky, 209 bottles worldwide, RRSP £1,700.

Whisky 1901 is a Scotch whisky investment company helping to connect potential investors with the right cask of whisky. They have a team of experts with years of financial experience and knowledge about the whisky industry. Brokers are supported by a fully resourced in-house team.

Founded in 2019 in Knightsbridge, London, by managing director Aaron Damiano Sparkes. The name Whisky 1901 is a nod to the founder’s father as they used to enjoy a dram together of what is now Aaron’s favourite whisky – a GlenDronach from cask number 1901.

Since 2019, Whisky 1901 now works with over 250 clients and has over 1,000 whisky casks under management. They have relationships with around 40 of Scotland’s finest distilleries and have two purpose-built bonded warehouse facilities in Glenrothes, Scotland.

What is whisky cask investment?

Whisky cask investment is a form of portfolio investment that involves buying a cask of whisky, liquid in a barrel in a warehouse, and holding it for a period of time. Typically, the value of the whisky increases over time as it gains age and flavour.* Whisky 1901 recommends a minimum 5–10-year investment.

Why invest in casks?

Whisky casks were once deemed a rare commodity limited to industry insiders, but now with prices starting at around £5,000 private and corporate investors can readily invest. There is a growing demand for whisky and, despite fluctuations, market stability makes whisky cask investing a good alternative to other assets, as the value of whisky casks is not driven by economics alone, but by maturation.

A cask purchased today will become a more desirable and valuable asset year-on-year.* Investors are turning to whisky casks to diversify their investment portfolios and grow wealth in an uncertain financial climate. The BC20 Index exhibited significant growth in 2022 and show a 15.86% annual capital growth rate for the year.

All cask whisky held under bond in Scotland is exempt from VAT and excise duty. These are only applied when whisky is bottled, so, if you sell your cask while it is still in bond, you can avoid paying this. Capital Gains Tax is also not applicable on sales of cask whisky as the product is classed as ‘wasting chattel’ due to the evaporation that occurs during maturation.

Barrelled whisky has significantly outperformed traditional investment options. The value of whisky casks continues to show double-digit growth.

For example: A £100,000 investment in cask whisky in July 2018 would have been worth £214,113 in December 2022. The same investment in gold would be worth £150,864 and an investment in the SP500 would have been worth £132, 327 according to the latest BC20 Index (a representative sample of 20 casks from a range of distilleries, whose value has been tracked since the beginning of 2019).

Why invest with Whisky 1901?

When seeking an investment with the best prospects for appreciation, there are eight key factors to consider: 1. Year of production 2. Age 3. Distillery 4. Barrel type 5. Original Litres of Alcohol (OLA) – the number of litres of pure alcohol originally placed in the cask. 6. Remaining Litres of Alcohol (RLA) – the litres of pure alcohol remaining in the cask after evaporation due to maturation. 7. Alcohol By Volume (ABV) 8. Bulk litres – the combined total of alcohol and liquid.

The Whisky 1901 team understands how valuable Scotch can be and they pair financial knowledge with a deep passion for whisky, bringing investors a considered approach to investing. They have an analytical process to whisky investing – assessing each variable from rarity, collectability and quality to determine the potential return on investment. They use their knowledge of the market and relationships with leading distilleries to identify opportunities and purchase casks for stock portfolio. When an investor invests with Whisky 1901, they are almost always buying from their stock.

You will be fully supported through buying and selling, making the process stress-free. The consultants will discuss the current market, your budget, investment timelines and risk appetite. There is no obligation to purchase and if you do decide to go ahead, you will be supported through the transaction and legal aspects. You will also receive a quarterly investment update from the consultants on current whisky market performance. Every two years you’ll receive analysis of your specific investment, detailing projected return on investment based on market prices. You can access details of your investment portfolio online via the online dashboard too.

If, or when, you are ready to sell, Whisky 1901 have investors interested in both new and mature casks within their client community, so they can tap into this network to find you a private buyer. Alternatively, you could sell to an open market, sell at auction or bottle your whisky, and you will be supported through whichever decision you choose.

With such highly knowledgeable and passionate brokers and all aspects of the business being in-house, Whisky 1901 will ensure the investment process is stress-free and fully explained, with full support available to investors throughout their journey. This really sets them ahead of other investment companies for those looking to invest their money in this exciting prospect in a growing market.

This renowned Dutch shipyard is a pioneer in the industry, with four decades of experience in the ultra-luxe sector of the market. Based in Oss, Holland – the home of yacht building – each Heesen superyacht uses proven engineering to deliver the kind of speed, style and fuel-efficient cruising that’s popular with the wealthy and famous. The brand has built a reputation for innovative boundary-pushing design, superior craftsmanship, the use of advanced tech and deep attention to detail. In recent years, Heesen Yachts has become a leader in sustainable yacht building in particular. Read on for the full lowdown on their super vessels.

A History Of Heesen

The company was founded in 1978 by Frans Heesen, previously employed in the aluminium industry. It began as a small operation building custom yachts from aluminium which allowed for faster and more efficient construction – and so Heesen Yachts became increasingly respected for their sleek, fast, and efficient vessels. Fast forward to today and Heesen Yachts is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking yacht builders in the world. The company has won numerous awards for its design and engineering and its yachts can be spotted in some of the world’s most exclusive marinas.

Bluenautech: A Comprehensive Sustainability Programme

Naturally, concern for the natural world is of prime importance to many purchasers and prospective customers planning on navigating the seas. As such, environmental responsibility is at the heart of Heesen’s operation. The shipyard has a six-pillar approach to sustainability, borne from a deep love for, and connection with, the ocean.

  • One of the most innovative design elements is the Heesen Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). Combining high speed with fuel efficiency, results in a yacht that is both fast and eco-friendly. The super lightweight aluminium FDHF design is up to 30% more fuel-efficient than traditional hull designs, reducing the carbon footprint of each yacht.
  • Hybrid propulsion systems combine traditional diesel engines with electric motors, allowing the yacht to switch between power sources as needed. This not only reduces fuel consumption but also results in a quieter, smoother ride for passengers.
  • With pleasure yachts spending most of their time at anchor, increasing generator power and HVAC efficiency is key. Heesen uses sustainable power generators and waste heat recovery to reduce total energy consumption.
  • The environmental impact on ports and marinas is mitigated via smart waste management and electric-powered tenders.
  • Recycled and alternative materials, such as sustainable woods, are used throughout the designs, both within and without.
  • The build is aided by 3D printing, electrostatic low-emission paint spraying, waste reduction and recycling to significantly reduce environmental impact.

You Dream It, Heesen Builds It

The design process caters for ultra-bespoke builds, incorporating lavish and outlandish features as you dare imagine. A handcrafted model of the vessel is created before being stringently tested and analysed for safety and performance. The process is so in-depth and thorough, that the shipyard will only undertake a single personalised commission at a time. No matter the spec and personalisation, each vessel promises power, beauty and performance. And you get to choose your level of input; whether it be a few customisations, semi-custom, or a 100% built-to-spec vessel utterly unlike any other.

Series Yachts

These are those yachts within the speculation programme which are fully engineered and therefore available with shorter delivery times than the full-custom models. There are currently three in the pipeline, all of which sleep up to 12 guests. Project Jade goes live in the second quarter of 2024, with a length of 50 metres and a speed of 23 knots. Project Orion is set to be delivered at the start of 2025, also at a length of 50 metres and with a speed of 16.3 knots. Omega Architects and Cristiano Gatto Design have worked on the exteriors and interiors, respectively, of both. Project Venus is due for delivery in the second quarter of 2025. At 55 metres long, it can achieve 15.5 knots and has been designed by Omega Architects and Luca Dini Design & Architecture.

Past Portfolio

But what of the rest of the fleet? There are 60 yachts in total, which include some of the following notable builds.

Ocean Z: This 50-meter motor yacht offers a spacious interior by Reymond Langton Design Ltd. Accommodating up to 10 guests in 5 cabins, Ocean Z boasts a range of impressive amenities, including a beach club and jacuzzi.

Galactica Super Nova: This 70-meter motor yacht is one of Heesen Yachts’ largest and most impressive with an exterior profile that is both powerful and elegant. The interior, by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, is equally striking, making use of the finest materials and finishes.

Project Cosmos: A whopping 80 meters in length, Project Cosmos is the work of Winch Design, with a range of ultra-luxe innovative features, such as a glass-bottomed swimming pool and a helipad.

MY Lusine. A 60-metre, full-custom, steel FDHF motor yacht, MY Lusine features the eye-catching ‘bird’s wing’ motif to join the main, bridge and sun decks without interrupting the flow of the tinted windows. While able to reach 17.5 knots, the vessel maintains a noise and vibration output well below the required levels, even at full pelt.

A true innovator at the very top of the yachting industry, Heesen Yachts is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with cutting-edge technologies and out-of-the-box design. As the world becomes increasingly focused on sustainability, the brand proves that both ocean-going luxury and ocean-loving eco-friendliness can exist in perfect harmony.

From its base in the northern Netherlands, Wajer Yachts has been crafting superior-quality vessels for a little over three decades. Among the fastest boats in their class, Wajer Yachts boast fluent lines, trademark deep riding cockpit and low window frames for an ultra-sleek aesthetic that’s paired with the best in technical engineering below deck. And each, whilst sharing some signature characteristics, is unique.

A Founding Father

The story begins in 1992 when Dorus Wajer started building his own launches in his father’s shed, on the lakes near Amsterdam. From here, Wajer’s first creation, a 28-foot open-day boat entitled The Captain’s Launch, took to the water. And with this, Wajer Yachts was born, quickly gaining a reputation for quality and innovation. Expanding its product line to include larger and more luxurious yachts, the brand now offers an enticing range; from the entry-level Wajer 38 to the flagship Wajer 77. But while the company has seen a fast evolution and unfettered growth, it remains a family affair with Dries Wajer (son of Dorus) now at the helm, as MD of the company.

Handmade in Holland

The Netherlands has long been synonymous with seafaring and boatbuilding, so it’s appropriate that this should have been the birthplace of Wajer Yachts. Each boat is hand-built in the company’s state-of-the-art shipyards in Heeg, Lemmer and Heerenveen, Friesland, by 250 perfectionist craftspeople. Using the finest materials and the latest technology, the dedicated team produce vessels with distinctive design; from the sleek lines of the Wajer 38 to the bold styling of the Wajer 77, each yacht is a masterpiece of modern maritime architecture. Working alongside some of the world’s leading boat experts, such as Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, Wajer ensures its yachts are both beautiful and functional. Every model is built to order onsite, with the ability to incorporate bespoke features.

Fulfilling a Need For Speed

Powered by high-performance engines, these yachts can reach impressive speeds while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency. Whether you’re cruising the Mediterranean or exploring the waters of the Caribbean, a Wajer yacht provides an exhilarating boating experience. But this is not at the expense of serenity or eco-cred. While the inbuilt Volvo Penta IPS system makes the vessels fast, they’re also quiet, with excellent knots per gallon ratio and lower emissions than many competitors. With an aerodynamic design, Wajer Yachts provide this combination of a faster ride and a sublime aesthetic, creating the illusion that the hull is slicing through the ocean — be it at rest or at play. And playtime in one of these is a whole lot of fun.

An Intuitive Sail

Novice sailors can rest easy when it comes to purchasing a Wajer Yacht as a first foray into the world of sailing. Each is filled with intuitive features to make the experience as effortless as possible. A deep-V hull design and supportive seating create a smooth ride for those unused to riding the waves. Docking is made easy with joystick control. Inflatable fenders can be deployed and retracted with the push of a button, and you can watch the anchor drop remotely, from a screen in the cockpit. Wajer has used technological innovation to take much of the hard work out of sailing, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the – spectacular – journey.

Service ‘Without a Worry’

Wajer’s team provides owners with all the support and guidance they need to make the most of their new purchase, be that training and maintenance, concierge services or on-board entertainment. Their Service ‘Without a worry’ ethos ensures every need is met, with representatives resident in France, Balearics, Mainland Spain and the United States, as well as on home turf. And ownership is not the only route to experiencing a Wajer on the waves. The company provides a charter service and fully organised day trips in Amsterdam, the Côte d’Azur & Ibiza — it’s an ideal way to try before you buy and dip your toe into this luxury world on water.

Awards and Accolades

This level of quality and innovation doesn’t go unnoticed. In 2018, the company was named “Best Dutch Yacht Builder” at the World Yachts Trophies awards ceremony in Cannes. And in 2019, the Wajer 55 won the prestigious “Motor Boat of the Year ” award at the London Boat Show. And the brand is a favourite among discerning sailors around the globe, appealing to new and veteran yachtspeople. The company takes a proactive approach to environmental responsibility too, incorporating sustainable materials and processes and energy-efficient systems into production methods.

The Flotilla

If this has whetted your appetite for some raw ocean power, what options are there for prospective customers? There are currently eight models in the fleet:

  • Wajer 38 S (a sportier version of the Wajer 38 with a more streamlined design and powerful engines).
  • Wajer 38 L (the uber-luxe sibling of the Wajer 38 with two cabins, a galley and a large living space).
  • Wajer 44 (the newest addition to the Wajer fleet and fully connected according to the self-developed Smart Boating principle)
  • Wajer 55 (with three cabins, living area and a fully equipped galley for longer cruises).

A community for the luxury and ultra-luxury vacation rental industry, Sirreti offers invitation-only membership to those who operate at the highest level within these sectors. Founded in 2021 by Wolf Worster – alongside a panel of industry leaders curated from across the worlds of top-end holiday rentals, VIP travel and luxury transport – the consortium is diverse, representing over 20 countries.

Sirreti Members

But Sirreti should not be confused with booking platforms. Instead, it’s an association whose membership includes travel agents working with ultra-high-net-worth (plus $30 million) and very-high-net-worth (plus $5 million) clients; as well as concierge companies, celebrity managers, family offices, property owners, owner representatives, property managers and villa agencies.

Member Benefits

Those joining the Sirreti fold receive access to the following:

  • One-of-a-kind networking opportunities, with direct access to luxury travel agents, celebrity managers and family offices within the Sirreti Members’ portal
  • Inclusion and representation in Sirreti’s presentations to luxury travel bookers in Los Angeles and New York
  • Free attendance to a sponsored conference, planned for May 2024, with discussions, presentations and Q&A talks like shortstayweek.com
  • Listing on sirreti.com and permission to use the Sirreti Logo for marketing/online to identify as a luxury rental industry organisation
  • Inclusion in Sirreti’s monthly newsletter and partner publications, such as The Review
  • Learning materials in the form of live and on-demand webinars, with top insider tips from industry experts
  • The annual report, Sirreti Insights, by the company’s own data analyst, which looks at the patterns of wealthy travellers who book luxury private accommodations

Sirreti Insights

This industry first is currently being compiled using Sirreti’s own data analyst, a selection of graduate students, industry partners, Sirreti’s members and its company statistics. The only data and industry report on “luxury private accommodations” and its UHNW and VHNW guests, the inaugural report will be released in the fourth quarter of 2023. And it’s set to become an invaluable tool for anyone operating within this top tier of the travel sector.

Creating a dialogue for the industry

As part of Sirreti’s global impact, Wolf Worster has compiled an international council for founders and CEOs representing the world’s largest and most established luxury vacation rental firms (council members do not have to be Sirreti members). These include the founder at Le Collectionist, founder of WIMCO, the COO at OneFineStay and 18 others from across the globe. Formed with the goal of adopting and promoting industry guidelines and definitions, The Sirreti Council creates an unprecedented dialogue within the industry. This is achieved by facilitating and moderating discussions, as well as sharing Sirreti’s own considerable knowledge and track record of results.

Created with the intention of pioneering best practices, professional development and positive change, Sirretii works to promote those operating within the industry, strives to learn more about traveller behaviours and identifies trends early on. An undoubted leader in luxury travel, Sirreti’s level of engagement and fostering of international partnerships is both encouraging and enabling its members to thrive.
